"Goodbye" || stillthemonster (prof verse, perhaps - as if we haven't got enough angst)
Send me “Goodbye” for the last voice message my muse leaves for yours before they die.
This wasn’t the way Belle had thought - or hoped - she would die. For one thing, she didn’t think she’d be this terrified. Nick wasn’t by her side like she had wanted, either. She didn’t want him to have to watch her die.
Not that a voicemail was a better way, but she still wanted to say goodbye. Belle was already nearly in tears when his answering machine finally turned on, playing his message before beeping to let her know she could speak.
“…I love you, Nick. I-I’ve been in love with you since the day we m-met. Remember that? I was reading, and… a-and I bumped into you and made you spill coffee on yourself. You weren’t very friendly until you found out I’m a teacher. Asked me about books, then. And if I’d walk you to your car.” she let out a soft laugh, then sniffled. “You were such a flirt. You were trying to fluster me with Shakespearean innuendos, and it worked. Then I changed your tie, and you kissed me in the hall.” she had to pause for a long moment, and when she continued her voice was shaking and it was obvious she was crying.
“A-after everything w-we’ve been through… it ends like this. I-I thought I’d get to spend the rest of my life with you. I guess I have, but I thought we’d have more time.” by then, tears were rolling down her cheeks. “No matter what you may think, I-I love you. I have always loved you.”
There was another long moment of silence from her. “I-I… I’m scared. I wish you were here to hold me a-and say it’ll be okay. But… I guess I should be telling you that. Y-you’ll be okay. You might be sad for a while, but it’ll get better a-and you’ll move on. Just be happy, okay?” she swallowed. “…Then love-devouring Death do what he dare. Goodbye, Nick.” and the message was over.
