As the last few hours of 2020 started to dwindle, I stole a few minutes to reconcile how much plans we made last year vs how the year changed them all, unapologetically without permission. While Mother Earth became the recipient of its much needed healing, so many lives were lost. While we had so much vast empty space, by land, sea or air, people were grounded in isolation. It baffles me how such irony existed let alone, how it happened in our lifetime. What a year to remember because it was much of a year to learn from. No one was better by circumstance, as by some degree or magnitude, everyone felt worse. While I learned that there was “no right way to feel” it was worth acknowledging that every person alive, regardless of what we said, or did, was more or less just “learning to cope.” Judgment would not have found any place if we were to stay mentally and emotionally sane. There was only understanding. Empathy would have won if there was a race for virtue of the year. This I know for sure - we are not the same person we used to be before the pandemic started and for posterity’s sake, I can only hope we changed for the better. 2020 may have stolen so much from us enough to merit angst or regret. Is that the kind of life we want to live though? I doubt it. Here’s raising a glass with hopes it meets another, overflowing with claim for everything better - because everyone deserves it. The battle is not with people who were either in the frontlines of healthcare or leaders who decided on employment fate. The battle is within ourselves, against any perspective that brought us farther away from love, trust, respect and most of all kindness. To you reading this, we made it through one of the toughest years the world has probably known. It wasn’t just about being able to say “I got this.” We actually made it to finish line of a year we dare not even imagine. Remember that kind of courage. Permanently appreciate what and who we have. When lives are at stake, the toughest year reminds us that we actually have everything we could ask or hope for. 2021, ready when you are buddy.
