“Come.”
The company followed Gandalf, wary of the boulder that had been cast aside. Bilbo cautiously stepped into the mouth of the cave at the tail end of the line, treading lightly for fear that another troll might be lying in wait to gobble them up for a mid-morning snack. His hairy foot crunched something beneath it, which caused Bilbo to squeak and withdraw a step or two. Dori and Nori snickered at him as they filed into the darkness.
“Only a bone,” he sighed, his own bones chilling as soon as he spoke. Bones. They were all around him, and oh, the stench that cave had. Bilbo’s nose crinkled and he gave it a pinch. No fainting today, no sir.
While the others were busy excavating, Bilbo looked towards Gandalf and continued to avoid the main area of fussing over web-covered weapons by keeping to the wall. The back end of the cave was considerably darker, and Bilbo reached out in front of him to feel his way. His fingertips touched something soft and smooth.
“Hullo, what’s this?”
