New York Lesson
Today's lesson as a New Yorker - do not leave your phone out in the open, even right in front of you on a table at Starbucks, because someone will grab and go!
Experience: iPhone 4s stolen right before my eyes - snatched from the table and was on its way down Park Ave in the hands of some tourist-looking twenty-something-year-old.
Reaction: "WTF just happened? Ok, I should probably chase him." So, I chased the guy down Park Ave but realized he was with another guy who might have planned to take my computer I left behind at Starbucks, so I had others help me chase the guy while I went back to get my stuff.
Lesson based on my reaction: Yell for help earlier during the chase to prompt potential heroes to come forth.
The real lesson here is this: My digital life may be on that phone- in fact, that might be what seems like my entire life/world. But it's a manmade life that can be recreated.
We mustn't forget that our lives began within the flesh, in our souls- it is this life we're given that carries the potential to grow and assimilate to the unexpected challenges set before us. No need to depend so wholly on a device to strive through life when we have our abled minds and bodies.
The Challenge: understanding the quantified self and thinking about whether that means something to society as a whole. If it does, what does the future look like with digital technology as part of this fast-paced evolution. How can we make digital technologies supplement our lives to make better, without necessarily taking over our lives.
