Y’all I wanna talk about No Eyes. 

No Eyes is a ghost you fight in the Stone Sanctuary in Hollow Knight, that dark place full of spikes. If you don’t want spoilers for any of this stop here. 

So I just got done fighting her and... She is... unusual. As I was fighting her I came up with a theory. 

If you’ve been in the Abyss you’ve seen the bodies. There were many Vessels which were deemed imperfect and sealed away, but at what point where they decided to be imperfect? How many batches of these children did they have at a time, and how long did they keep them before the Pale King could decide that none of these ones would work out? Where I’m going with this is... Someone must have cared for those children. 

Presumably the Pale King didn’t only use constructs because you can find a bug dead in the lighthouse in the abyss. So some of his retainers were involved in this project. 

No Eyes was presumably very close to the king, her entry in the journal says she ‘disappeared during the infection’ which is incredibly vague. I almost feel it’s intentionally vague. Perhaps the circumstances of her death were concealed by her family, because she, I don’t know, went crazy and killed several of her charges before killing herself? 

I mean... her dialogue just really, really seems to fit this for me. 

My child... can you still see? Please, don't hurt me!  

This seems to be addressed to us, the Knight or Ghost or what have you. She appears to recognize us and associate us with the children she addresses during the rest of the fight, and she’s afraid. 

Can't sleep... with your eyes open, little one.

Perhaps she found the blank, eyes-open, soulless gaze of all the Siblings disturbing and was weirded out by their sleeping with eyes open and not having mouths, among other things. Yet she calls them “precious” and appears to care for them while also being terrified of them... it’s very conflicted, you could see where that would drive someone crazy after a while. 

Precious children, a monster has come for us in the dark...Will you sing for me?

Is the monster a reference to us, now? The Stone Sanctuary is quite dark. Who is she asking to sing, though? She wasn’t directly addressing us in that line, but the “children”. ...Would one of the Siblings sing for her, once? Is that the song she’s singing now? Is it one they’d sing together? 

One by one... their eyes closed at last. I felt it... a warm stillness falling over us.

This is the dialogue upon defeat. She’s received a sense of peace and closure. She imagines the Siblings being able to sleep like normal children, and in her mind, they all finally can rest, together. 

I'm sorry I was frightened of you. You were always protecting us, even when we couldn't see you.

This, again, appears to be addressed to us directly. It shows that she recognizes not only that we are not a monster but that we are trying to protect them. Does she recognize us as a Vessel? Does she know we’re trying to help, as we were created to do? 

Take us there, please. A place where light can not haunt us, a place without dreams...Please...  

This last line is interesting. Is she begging for death, or what she believes death will be like? Or... is she asking to be taken to the Abyss? It’s a place safe from Light (and someone else, on the wiki, suggested that this line implies that No Eyes dreamed of the Radiance and tore out her own eyes to try to stop the visions, which is also an interesting theory which makes a lot of sense, but I like mine better). And... that’s where they threw the Siblings. Perhaps she still feels responsible for them and wants to care for them. 

I wanna cry now...

Sanctuary on side of Mexican volcano could be universe model

Mexican archaeologists say they have excavated a stone sanctuary in a pond on the side of a volcano east of Mexico City that may have been built as a miniature model of the universe.

The National Institute of Anthropology and History says the remnants of the stone "tetzacualco" were in the center of a natural pond below the Iztaccihuatl volcano at an elevation of nearly 13,000 feet.

In addition to the sanctuary, decorative pieces associated with the rain god Tlaloc were found nearby.

Archaeologist Iris del Rocio Hernandez Bautista says some Mesoamerican creation myths hold that the earth monster Cipactli floated on primeval waters and then split itself, thus creating the heavens and earth. She says the site at Nahualac could emulate that idea. Read more.
