ok here’s the preview since i can’t resist myself !!
Irene fell onto her bed, hoping the end of the week would come quickly and finally offer her some time to take a breath. Everything was suffocating, her job, the rain that came almost every day since the change in season, the noises of speeding cars and drunk pedestrians outside of her apartment complex- it was all starting to become too much.
Irene shut her eyes and began to think of the sea. The beach, and how relaxing it would be to go to one and clear her mind. She hadn't even been near sand since her high school days, but the images of her school's senior retreat at a beach resort remained fresh in her mind.
Those days, and the people she spent them with... do they even remember her now, Irene thought. She'd spent so much of her high school career so focused on academics that everything seemed to pass her by so quickly.
Except for Marcella, the one person that always made her laugh and kept her grounded when things got complicated. But as strong as the friendship was, Irene felt like it'd be a waste of time for anyone to remember her.
But those days have long since passed. Reveling in the past just made things depressing, Irene thought. She turned over and prepared to fall asleep until suddenly, her cell phone began to ring.
Irene grabbed the device and looked at the screen. An unknown number, probably a tax collector. But even with that in mind, something compelled her to answer the call anyway.
Irene's eyes shot open as she immediately recognized the voice on the other line.
But she couldn't be too sure. This had to be some kind of dream.
"Yes, who's speaking?" Irene responded groggily.
"Marcella Davis, from Hepatica High. I don't know if you remember me, it's been so long and--"
"--No no, I remember you." Irene reassured.
"You do? Thank god," Marcella sighed in relief. "I know it's late but I saw something that reminded me of you earlier and I couldn't get your face out of my head all day. So, I looked you up and found your number so I just had to call. How are you? What've you been up to lately?"
"Just surviving, I guess. Nothing noteworthy's been going on... How about you?"
"I'm pretty good. I'm working as a soccer coach for a children's team."
"Of course, it's so fun! You?"
"No, I never have the time anymore," Irene sighed. "My job takes up a lot of time, sometimes I barely have enough time to think. It's crazy..."
"That does sound crazy. You worked a lot in high school too, take a break for once!" Marcella jokingly chastised.
"I wish I could." Irene chuckled softly.
"Do you still live in Sycamore?"
"Yeah, I live just outside of downtown."
"Great, I don't live too far downtown either! We should meet up; when are you free?"
"Uh, I'm free on the weekend."
"Me too. Let's meet up on Saturday, how does 2 o' clock sound? We can meet at the Yulia's."
"S-Sounds good. I'll see you then."
"Mhm, see you then. It was good hearing your voice again, Irene. I can't wait to see you."
Irene felt her entire body heat up all the way to her ears. "Y-Yeah, me too. Bye." she stammered before hanging up and setting her phone next to her pillow. She fell onto the soft surface of her bed and covered her face and squealed while kicking her legs in the air in sheer giddiness. She felt like a 14 year old all over again.
She was still in complete disbelief. Irene's eyes moving to her phone. She didn’t want to admit how much she craved the touch of someone else, preferably a woman, but her heart raced at the mere thought of being able to see and touch Marcella again.
Six years. It really has been a long time, she thought.
