Last night, I was honored to receive the Stonewall Service Award from the Conference on College Composition & Communication, the flagship organization for my academic discipline. It’s a strange thing to accept an award for service when you look around see people doing far more than you, or certainly just as much, but in a profession where there are rarely raises to match the frustrations, budget cuts, and endless bureaucracy, awards certainly offer their own sort of support. I’m so grateful to the wonderful folks who nominated me: Trav Webster, Caroline Dadas, Lisa Blankenship, Michael Faris, Michelle Eble, Erin Frost, and Nikki Caswell. One of the great perks of my job has been getting to work with graduate students both locally and nationally, and I met most of those folks when they were grad students and I was still early in my career. I’ve tried to be of use to them and others, particularly the LGBTQ+ students entering our field, and I’m excited to get more years to keep plugging away at it.
