There was a certain panic that rose through her whenever she was grabbed. It brought back years of repressed moments where she remembered the exact moment she had been taken, the exact day where her life had fallen to pieces...the exact day she lost her voice. This time, though, she was safe in her brother’s arms.
Jesse moved with a swiftness that even she forgot he had, one ear pressed to his chest, listening to his rapid heartbeat. If a heartbeat could sound angry, his did. Juliette felt a hand cup over her ear and pulled closer to him, preparing for what was going to come next.
There it was. Jesse lost his temper and started screaming at the guard, who, in his defense, was doing his job. Of course, he was doing a terrible job, but it was still his job. Juliette squeezed her eyes shut, flinching at Jesse hurled his ID card and led her into the school.
He was quick to start checking her over, smoothing her hair out, and generally being harshly overprotective. Then, when did he stop doing that? Juliette looked up at him, clear blue eyes glistening with unshed tears, but otherwise unharmed. She blinked a few times, wiping at her face before rapidly trying to sign at him.
“I’m okay, it’s okay, I’m sorry.”
She was so rattled that both her hands and voice shook when she realized he probably didn’t understand too much of what she was trying to say.
“I’m---fine, I’m fine. He didn’t hurt me, he was just doing his job, I’m sorry, I forgot my ID card in my room, I didn’t mean to cause trouble, I should have called my roommate, I just---”
What a mess she had caused. Juliette instinctively froze as she heard footsteps.
“Get back here!”
A second set of footsteps.
“Brian, you fucking moron! What the hell was that?! You’ve been here one day and already caused a damn fight?!”
She heard a hushed, but angry argument between the two, before the next statement popped up.
“She’s a student here, stupid. Did you try calling one of us to check before practically assaulting her? She’s not a threat, she’s mute and my damn twelve year old is bigger than she is, what is she gonna do, sign at people until they die of confusion? Go to base and don’t fucking say a word to anyone until I get there.”
The footsteps faded. Later that night, she would find both Jesse’s ID and a new ID for herself taped to her door with a formal apology from administration.
But for now, in this moment, she was offering her brother a tearful smile.
“Sorry, Jesse, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to, I just froze, I should have just...I don’t know, I’m sorry. Please don’t be mad at me, I didn’t mean to.”
