Marius's Story: Our Inspiration

Today, we posted the second instalment of our “My Story” video campaign, named “Marius’s Story”.

The inspiration behind this video was following the huge controversy and mass publicity of Marius, a healthy 2 year old giraffe, who was killed by Copenhagen Zoo because he was deemed unsuitable for breeding. Although many other zoo’s offered to home Marius, Copenhagen Zoo declined these offers and instead, resorted to killing Marius and dissecting his body in front of a young, LIVE audience. Copenhagen Zoo claimed this dissection was purely “educational” but this was carried out in front of very young children who should not be exposed to this at such a young age.

Although many people petitioned against the killing, Copenhagen Zoo did not listen. Subsequently, this has caused public outrage and given rise to several issues across many animal rights campaign groups. Many animal rights groups have held protests, boycotts in addition to expressing disgust for Zoo’s who hold animals in captivity to begin with.

For this video, we used the story of Marius’s life and told this from his personal perspective. Due to this intimate and direct effect, we believed that this approach may enable viewers to consider how Marius, and other animals, personally feel and experience living in small enclosures and being subjected to death.

As stated throughout our campaign, the message for this video is that:

We believe animals should not be subjected to imprisonment or death. Animals should live naturally and happily in the wild. Please don’t let them suffer any longer. Let them live in the Wild, where they belong.

What happened to Marius was absurdly disgusting and unacceptable. Why should Zoo’s have the right to murder innocent and perfectly healthy animals? Marius was only 2 years old.

We are truly saddened and outraged to hear the news that Copenhagen Zoo have killed 2 healthy Lions and 2 healthy cubs. After the tragic death of Marius the Giraffe, it is unbelievable and a disgrace that Copenhagen Zoo have killed even more innocent and perfectly healthy animals.
