Smart storage ideas for meat
by www.beautyandfitnessmalta.com
Take heed of these few simple steps to eat good meat without breaking the bank:
1. Be a meal planner – this will allow you to better assess what to buy and in which quantities, thus preventing waste
2. Organise your refrigerator/pantry better – this will better showcase your ingredients so no ingredients will get lost at the back
3. Know the shelf life of the products you bought – this will help you know what’s on today’s cooking list and what can wait until the following day
4. Keep meat and poultry in their original packaging when you place them in the refrigerator
5. To freeze them, slip the packaging into a resealable freezer bag. If you are freezing for a longer period of time, wrap the pieces individually in plastic before bagging as this will make them less vulnerable to freezer burn
6. Leave seafood in its original packaging and if possible place on a bowl of ice in the fridge; live shellfish shouldn’t be put on ice (poke holes in the packaging)
7. (a) Beef and lamb chops should be kept in the fridge for 3 days or in the freezer for 6 months.
(b) Ground meat and premade patties should be kept in the fridge for 2 days or in the freezer for 4 months.
(c) Roasts and loins should be kept in the fridge for 3 days or in the freezer for 6 months.
(d) Uncooked sausage should be kept in the fridge for 2 days or in the freezer for 2 months.
(e) Steaks should be kept in the fridge for 3 days or in the freezer for 6 months.
(f) Stew meat should be kept in the fridge for 2 days or in the freezer for 4 months.
8. Leave meat at the bottom of the fridge so as to avoid having it drip on other foods
9. To thaw meat, place the wrapped meat on a plate and put it on the bottom shelf of the fridge
10. Get meat into the fridge as soon as you get home from the store
11. Any piece of meat has around 4 hours of it being good out of a refrigerated place before being cooked, assuming there is moderate room temperature. During summer, that amount of time is slashed in half
12. Once opened, a pack of hot dogs will last for a week in the fridge, while deli-sliced meats stay fresh for five days. Bacon lasts up to 7 days
