âItâs Champagne, you have to have a glass on New Years,â she pressed the glass into their hand, not accepting any refusal.
âI guess I didnât get the memo I was supposed to dress up.â
âUgh. This champagne tastes like dust. Iâm going to make myself a drink...â Riley turned to the nearest person, âwant one?â
Pick pocketing had become second nature to Darling in the last few years. It was a few simple steps. They walked along a busy sidewalk, until they saw somebody who nervously checked their pockets, making sure everything was still there. Pretend to sell them something, divert their attention, grab the wallet, replace it with a walk, then quickly move along. Walking away from the unsuspecting target, they kept their head low as they moved through the crowd.
Rounding a corner, they collided with somebody. Looking at them, the face was familiar. Too familiar. A familiar face was never good as far as they concerned. Especially since they knew why they were familiar. Maybe the other wouldnât notice them. Darling didnât stand out in the facility and since then, their hair had grown out. âSorry,â They muttered quietly as they tried to move around them, keeping their head low and their gaze to the sidewalk.
The January cold of Cleveland was biting her cheeks, and Farrah kept her head down so she could hide half of her face in her gray knit scarf. Both hands were occupied with two leashes apiece, a sheltie and white Mastiff on her left, and a waddling bulldog in a jacket and her own pitbull mix on her right, making it nearly impossible for her to cover herself more. Peering up to check the street sign she was passing, she sighed at the realization her route had nearly another hour to go. She felt a leash tighten unexpectedly, and immediately dug in her heels to prevent being swept off her feet. âMax!â she snapped, dragging on the leash as her pitbull leapt at a passerby, tail wagging furiously and tongue lolling. âStop that!â she reeled him in with an iron grip, eyes darting up to meet whoever he had jumped on. âIâm so sorry. He wonât bite.âÂ
âCheers! Hereâs to 2018!â
Road often traveled/ Riley& Sid
Sid knew the drive theyâd planned was going to take most of the day, and the longer they took getting going the later it would be when they finally made it to Philly. Sid sent Riley another text, this time just three car emojis in a row and Sid assumed that sheâd understand what they meant. Though it had only been about a minute since heâd sent his first text to announce heâd arrived.
The weather was stilling battling it out for coldest day of the year, but Sid had cranked up the heat in the car to an almost uncomfortable degree and their winter clothing had been stripped and strewn across the backstreet. Waiting for Riley to finally come out, Sid fiddled with the music, hitting next over and over as the tried to land on the perfect song. So far nothing had sounded right.
âShit,â Wren hissed under his breath as he ran through the streets. So it wasnât the best idea to punch a man in the face but in his defenseâŠhe had no defense. Outrunning the man, easy. Escaping, not so much. Especially when they were running out of breath. Swerving behind a crowd, they grabbed a random person, taking a hat off of somebody else and quickly putting it on before pulling the stranger to the alley. âJust, act like you know me and stand right there.â He said, slouching in an attempt to use them as a shield to hide them. Watching as the man went right past, he grinned. âThanks. You actually saved my ass.â
