Not to disagree with Polk but they are BOTH the pretty ones!

They really are. Polk has been clingy this morning, though. She got all tangled up in a curtain and couldn’t get free, so I had to disentangle her and give her some reassuring snuggles, and ever since she’s been glued to my lap. It’s unusual and really pretty delightful.

Mine are climbers, so the tree was more to stop them from climbing the drapes (which they still would like to do but I’ve taken most of them down). They were wary of it at first, but I just left it in a corner for a while until they got used to it.

The way I showed them to use the scratching post when they first came home was to sit in front of it and scratch it with my own fingers, which made an interesting crunchy noise they really liked, so it got their attention and then they figured out they could scratch it too. So I did the same thing with the cat tree -- it has scratching-posts for all its poles, so I scratched the bottom poles, then the higher-up ones, so that they knew it was okay for scratching. And Polk by that time was climbing the other scratching post, so climbing followed naturally.

It took them a day or two to get used to it and they still don’t like the little house in the middle, but eventually they started climbing it and playing on it. I think it helps that from the top platform they can see into the kitchen to watch me cook, and they can also see the entire living room, so even if they’re at the other end of the room, they can keep an eye on me on the sofa.

I mean, they were basically like the cheese crackers but less flavorful. The cream cheese had no real flavor to it at all.

How do you cook in the US allergic to peanut butter? It's like every recipe has to include it! Brownies? No! Peanut butter brownies! Jam sandwich? No! Peanut butter jam sandwich! Caprese salad? No! Peanut butter caprese salad! Why

I had so many reactions to this :D 

1. I don’t even know what caprese salad is, other than obviously a kind of salad.

2. I feel like you maybe were looking at like a cookbook put out by the peanut board? Yes there is pressure to use a low-cost, high-yield, high-protein nut in a lot of foods but not...that many foods. I’ve never had peanut butter in a brownie. And in theory a peanut butter and jam sandwich is marginally healthier for you than a jam sandwich as long as you’re not allergic, since peanuts have protein, otherwise it’s basically just a sugar sandwich. 

3. Realistically though, almond butter. :D I just put almond butter into anything requiring peanut butter.

Hey Sam, like everyone on the internet I need some advice. I've landed a lab internship this summer, which is obviously fantastic as it means I get a jump start on work experience etc (I'm in the 2nd year of my degree) The thing is, I'm seriously scared of starting work with a whole load of people I don't know. I know I need to just suck it up and go but it's still terrifying. How do you deal with this sort of anxiety?

Well, I personally deal with it by having several small freakouts over the course of a couple of days. :D 

It’s okay to be anxious. In fact, since you already have the job, it’s even okay to say you’re anxious if someone asks how you’re doing.

The thing is, everyone’s had a new job where they don’t know everyone, and people know how overwhelming it can be. Just take your time, repeat names after you’re told them, and if in the first few days you don’t remember who someone is, say, “God, I’m sorry, I’m still new, you’re....?” 

For the first few days, keep your head down and listen and learn -- you’ll get the flavor of the office pretty quickly. You don’t have to be a Super Participating 100% Committed Talker To People right off the bat, you can hold back a little until you feel on sound footing. 

Remember to ask questions, and if you need to, write down the answers. It’s better to ask early than not know and have to ask later. 

Don’t be afraid to be excited. This sounds like a great, cool job and people like enthusiasm! Nobody’s gonna tell you it’s not cool to be a nerd about science when you are in a science lab. 

If you’re feeling super uncertain on your first day, wear clothes that make you feel confident and pack something reassuring with you, like a book you love. 

I’m not gonna lie, sometimes I take action figures to work with me. They just stay in my bag, but I know they’re there and it helps me get through the day. 

Good luck and have fun! The first few days will pass quickly and you’ll be settled in soon enough :)

Aw, thank you! No, I rarely get a comment on it in brickspace, although the Office Grandpa who does calligraphy said it was very tidy once. (Also I am not a lefty, sadly.)

Apparently it looks like my father's, which is interesting since it didn't when I was 11 (the age I was when he died). I think a lot of the tidiness of it is to do with studying scene design in college -- I took three years total of drafting, but I was always way more interested in drafting script than the drafting itself. (You can see remnants of the drafting script in that one long stem on the caps G, and the way my capital Ls tip up -- the latter makes the horizontal line of the L pop from the drafting lines and makes it easier to read.)

When you learn drafting script, you literally approach handwriting with a t-square and a triangle. Or at least I was made to. It trains you to be very tidy. :D

My mum's is actually way nicer -- she literally learned copperplate cursive, her handwriting looks like a goddamn font.
