My Treat - A RhenxDameon holiday fanfic
As the sun set in the distance, the fading light cast a warm glow over the sparkling city of Thais. The pinks and reds along the horizon were perfectly fitting for that particular date, as it set on their festival of love.
It was a day that was cherished by many, even the sullen and unwillingly single could be coaxed into joining into the fun with flavourful treats and daring games. The streamers in the air above their heads shimmered and twirled with the help of careful spells, traditional dancers dancing seemingly effortlessly through gauzy scarves hung specifically for this event.
“Dameon!! Look at those colourful fish!” The excited chirp of a lilac-haired young woman.
The tall young man with her laughed softly, allowing his companion to drag him through rows of people to the brightly lit booth.
“Rhen, the last fish that you got ended up dying. It probably isn’t the wisest idea to get a new one.” Dameon teased, glancing over her shoulder at all the fish in front of them.
Big violet eyes gazed up at him a moment entreatingly before Rhen let out a sigh and nodded, stepping away from the fish. “True, plus I don’t think that Softly would leave it alone.”
At the mention of their curious cat and the idea of a fish being brought around Dameon cringed, earning a laugh from Rhen who looped an arm through his.
“Lets go look at the dancers! And there are food carts, we should try some of the snacks!” Was the eagre suggestion, only for her forward motion to be brought up short by Dameon pulling her back.
“Actually… I have something else I’d like to show you. A Valentines surprise in a way?” He said with a teasing grin, resting his other hand over where she gripped his arm.
He led the way through the crowd, a man on a mission as he guided Rhen through the streets into a smaller side plaza. At the far end stood a restaurant, heart-shaped lights dancing across the cobblestone patio in front of the door.
“You’re taking me here?! They have world renowned Valentines cakes!” Rhen had surpassed average excitement now, and she couldn’t help but bounce in place as she took in the decorations.
“Is that a yes to my surprise?” Dameon asked, eyes sparkling as Rhen let out an exuberant cheer and flung her arms around his neck to hug him.
They quickly approached the door, the server shooting Rhen a bemused smile at the excitement before moving to the reservation book.
“Table for…?” He droned, clearly having asked that too many times that night.
“Pendragon.” Dameon stated, the man checking before waving them in.
Rhen’s eyes were wide as they moved down the aisle between tables, from the oak ceilings hung some of the biggest chandeliers Rhen had ever seen, twinkling like stars and reflecting light all across the floor. Dameon’s hand rested on her back, guiding her forward as she stared all around, eyes lingering on the giant display table of cakes.
Soon they were seated in a booth off to the side, an elegant heart candle on the table between them, Rhen eyeing the table in front of them in confusion.
“They don’t have menus?” She questioned, Dameon smiling and shaking his head as he gestured towards a serving cart at another table.
“They do tasting menus for couples, so I picked the one for the ‘extra hungry couple’ from their reservations list.” He shot Rhen a knowing look and she covered her mouth to muffle a laugh.
Their conversation was cut short as the server arrived to take their drink orders, handing Dameon a small menu to look through of beverages. For a moment Rhen watched him, before oh so casually slipping her hand into her purse to withdraw her wallet.
She cleared her throat softly, before repeating the noise louder at the lack of response. As the waiter looked over she carefully slid her bank card over, attempting to keep her motions subtle so her scarily attentive husband didn’t notice.
“Ma’am?” The server asked softly, Rhen winking and sliding the card to the edge.
The man was just reaching down to take it when a larger tan hand reached over to cover the card and Rhen’s fingers.
“Good try love.” The gently teasing comment made the lilac-haired young woman heave a sigh, looking guiltily up at Dameon who quickly gave his drink order so the server would leave.
Once the server was gone Dameon released her hand, chuckling as Rhen drew the card back to her side with a grumble. She had been so close!!
However, as the trays of food began to arrive at their booth all thoughts of paying vanished to the back of her mind, Rhen eagerly trying every plate that came to them and comparing their opinions of each new food. Neither of them were foodies, but it was great fun to pretend to be one for the night.
Partway through the meal Rhen’s eye caught sight of a server carrying a debit machine, eyes brightening with a certain amount of mischief as she made a point of looking around the room.
“I need to use the restroom, I wonder where theirs is.” She commented, reaching over to grab her purse without meeting Dameon’s eye. “I’ll be right back.”
Instantly she was up and out of the booth, making her way to where a server stood with a machine as with a triumphant grin she reached into her purse… only to find herself without a wallet.
She spun back to face the table, and let out an outraged squeak as her husband casually held it up between two fingers with an expression of carefully manufactured concern. He gestured to it and shrugged, as if to say that he had no idea how it could have been left at the table with him. Rhen could almost see the glow of magic fade around it, and even though it drove her nuts how her plans had been thwarted she couldn’t help the slight grin that flickered across her face.
As soon as she returned to the table he made a show of handing the wallet back.
“You must have dropped it on the seat in your haste to leave, you really should keep a better eye on your things my love.” The sun priest tisked lightly, eyes sparkling with humour.
She narrowed her eyes at him playfully, conceding defeat once more as she slipped her wallet back into its rightful place.
“You haven’t won yet.” She muttered, before picking up her fork and taking a dainty bite of her food, setting Dameon into a fit of laughter.
As the meal progressed the two of them found themselves eyeing the cakes more and more, with their dinner came complimentary cake samplers and if Rhen was honest that was the part she was most looking forward to.
“Your desserts~” A server sang out, approaching with a cart of delectable treats.
Row upon row, slices of dessert were slid across in front of them, cakes of all kinds and colours. The server bowed once the table was full, and no sooner had they left Rhen was quickly cutting loose a piece with her fork. She looked up to see Dameon watching her with a bright gaze, and after a moment of contemplation held the fork up to his lips.
“You came up with this amazing idea, and it’s only fair you get the first taste of these legendary cakes.” Rhen commented, her husband smiling softly and accepting her food offering.
The desserts were heaven, and even once they had both had their fill they had a full to-go bag of half finished slices for tomorrow. Slowly they rose, and with one side look at her brown-eyed love Rhen grabbed her wallet and took off for the front counter.
“Sir I need to pay for this right away!!” She announced, shoving the card across the counter at the man and pointing at the machine. “It’s very urgent!”
The server stared at her a moment wide eyed before clicking a few things on her computer. Then, the server glanced at Dameon before grinning slightly at Rhen.
“I’m afraid I can’t do that, the bill was paid in advance yesterday.”
Then Rhen slowly, very slowly, turned to face Dameon who was wearing a look of boyish pride as he wrapped an arm around her and kissed her forehead.
“You can get us a snack later sweetheart, tonight was my treat.”
