Before Jon and I went out on the parade route with the Deadly Rival Roller Derby team, I got a text from my mother saying she couldn’t believe I was transgender (even though I’ve tried to talk to her a few times) and that I will always be her daughter to her. It was a bit heartbreaking, to again realize that I will never be a son to my family even after I go on HRT. But I would not trade my journey for anything. I would get let go from those jobs for my identity all over again. I would endure the self-discovery and self-acceptance that was difficult at my age in my career. I’d change careers again too. I would not trade the acceptance I have found in both cosplay and the roller derby community. I would not trade the love of a man who I was sure couldn’t be out there for me. Someone who challenges me and accepts me with the curves I hate and the depression that often plagues me. And so I walked with pride for us and those who cannot leave the closet yet. - 💚 Echo
