O best beloved, Jan Tregeagle was Cornwall’s own Faust. And the story goes he signed a lease for a palace of wonders from Old Artful. But when the lease ran out, the Fiend sank the place to the bottom of Dozmary Pool, condemning Tregeagle to bail for his soul with a limpet shell. Forever. With imps plaguing him. To make the tortured soul proverbially “roar like Tregeagle”. But he must have found a way to escape, rising from the ashes, so the speak. Next we hear of Tregeagle, his deathless doomed soul, burning in Winter in Dozmary Pool, flees across the moor, the brown moor, with hellhounds on his trail.

The hounds had been on him since Christmas, baying across Bodmin, past St Roche, with eyes like embers and  breath like sulfur. The Hunter rode behind, death silent, as Tregeagle stumbled across the frozen moor, torn rags snapping in the wind.

Ahead, near Perranporth by the sea - a ruin. Once the oratory of St Piran himself, patron saint of Cornwall. The black bones of a chapel in the ground. But holy ground and thus still a sanctuary. Tregeagle threw himself across the ancient threshold, gasping and the hounds reeled back snarling, their claws sparking against the earth.

Sanctuary. But not salvation.

The pack, the loathsome, hellish pack, could not enter. And the poor soul in pain could not leave.

Came the feast day of the saint, all Cornwall celebrated, from Penzance to the Tamar.

And a shadow stirred on the ancient threshold. A figure stepped forth, veiled in cold fire, bearing a crozier marked in tin.

“Repent, Jan Tregeagle,” spoke St Piran. “Your fate is not yet sealed.”

And the poor soul in pain thought of his lost palace and his embosomed sins and his pride.

Tregeagle laughed, raw and broken. “No! No! No! I will not kneel, not to saint nor God!”

A long silence. The wind held its breath.

Then - the saint stepped aside.

The hounds surged forward. The Hunter followed.

Tregeagle screamed. And when the night fell still, the chapel was empty once more.

Some say, when the wind howls over Dozmary Pool, you can still hear him crying out, doomed to bail until the world’s end. Roaring like Tregeagle.
