STR4TA - Aspects - Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick of Incognito and Gilles Peterson team up for a set of throwback Brit-funk (Brownswood)

Gilles Peterson has partnered with Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick to reinvigorate the loose, protean energy of the early-80s Brit-funk scene. Long-time friends and collaborators, STR4TA sees them mine new musical possibilities out of that shared formative era. It was through Maunick’s band, Incognito – one of the essential groups of an oft-overlooked, vital pocket of Black British musical history – that they first connected. On “Aspects”, he and Peterson revisit that important period and the spirit that guided it: self-taught, DIY vitality, and a raucous energy built on live performance.

Bitte ganz tief eintauchen – in die UK Funk Szene zu Beginn der Eighties. Denn SRT4TA, das aktuelle Projekt von Gilles Peterson versetzt Sie genau dort hin. Mit dem zweiten Longplayer STR4TAFEAR hat das Duo den jazzigen Ansatz des Erstlings Aspects in Richtung Funk weiterentwickelt und ein echt groovendes kleines Monster erschaffen. Mit ganz fettem Grinsen im Gesicht tauche ich ein in die Welt von Shakatak, Hi Tension und Level 42. Hörbar sind eigentlich alle Exponate von STR4TAFEAR, aber am meisten groovt es bei Virgil (vocal version).

STR4TA / Lazy Days (feat Emma Jean Thackray)

Gilles Paterson (bestens bekannt als Radio Six Music) hat gemeinsam mit long time companion Jean Paul Maunik ein neues musikalisches Projekt am laufen: als STR4TA verörffentlicht das Duo seit 2021 Musik in direktem Kontext zur Brit-Funk Szene der frühen Eighties. Das aktuelle Album STR4TASFEAR klingt wie eine wide Mixtur aus frühen Level 42 (auch die waren mal gut!), Linx, Freeez und Shakatak (siehe Level 42!). Und ganz logisch, was zusammenkommen muss, findet zusammen. Und so erscheint es zwangsläufig, dass sich STR4TA die aktuelle Vorab-Single Lazy days von niemand anderem als der Jazz-Funk Fusion Queen Emma Jean Thackray veredeln ließen.
