This was a gothic, atmospheric graphic novel that had me hooked from start to finish. A supernatural crime procedural? With gorgeous artwork? It was always going to be a winner.

Jude was a compelling main character. I loved the way he saw the world and tried to make it a better place even if his methods were sometimes unorthodox. He had so much compassion for anyone different than him and he was a joy to read. I particularly enjoyed his relationship with Cecil and was hoping it would develop into something more given this book is marketed as queer, truth be told.

I wish this was a series, and that’s probably my only complaint. There’s so much potential to expand on this world and Jude’s particular line of work, but given where it ended, I doubt that’s possible now.

What are the odds...

Last week we admitted a middle age patient with known COVID.  They had been treated at another local hospital for about 2 weeks.  After being home for only a few days the showed up in our ED brought in by the family because they were totally disoriented.  Per family before COVID they had before been fully independent.  When in the ED, pt was not even oriented x1, unable to walk, flailing about, unable to speak but making strange hissing noises per documentation.  Had to be heavily sedated for anyone to get close enough to treat them.  Lord knows we keep finding COVID has a fuck ton of weird ass effects.  

I was on the desk that day so I contacted the other hospital for their records to see if anything strange happened there.  Pt’s case had been pretty severe, they’d been on bipap but never intubated.  Treated and weaned and when needing no oxygen during the day and minimal at night was sent home.  Nothing out of the ordinary.

We do a repeat swab and it show’s they are still COVID + so we think maybe it is just COVID being COVID?  Scans show it isn’t a stroke.  Neuro and ID start ordering all kinds of tests and long story short.... turns out this poor patient on top of COVID also had West Nile encephalitis.  

What shitty shitty luck!  Happily though the pt is being treated and was greatly improved as my last shift, weak but able to stand and fully oriented.  I am now off for a few weeks (to spend time with my new nephew without being paranoid I am giving everyone COVID) so imagine they will d/c back home long before I return.

Redesign of a creature I drew back in 2012. The idea was this critter is the embodiment of envy, released from Pandora’s box (or jar) and would steal objects/things/body parts at random.

Redrawing this was a lot of fun, considering I haven’t used a tablet in a long time. Also decided to make this look a bit more classical like a beast from ancient greek myths; more serpentine and goat-ish features.
