STORY TIME These are my crows, Spot, he was my first friend, Dot, his girl, and Tot, their kid😊🥰 they are a part of my strange lil tribe. About 18 months ago I met Spot while digging up and redoing the rock garden in the front yard. He would come and watch me almost all day and at times chatter to me. We talked about the day, what he was up to.....and about the yummy grubs I would find and placed in "his" bowl for the end of the day. This last spring we received our first chicks! When I started putting in their outside pen, I was still building their home and run, Spot would perch above them and even chatter to them. As spring turned to summer and summer into fall I started to notice that a strange little tribe had formed in our back yard. Our dog, cats, chickens and crows, yes Spot brought friends, had formed a bond. In January the neighbors dog tore a board right off the fence and started killing our girls! As I ran to save them I found myself surrounded by crows, cats and my two brave head hens fighting off this predator! Mike, our dog was inside. In the end we lost four of our beautiful girls and the last two were severely injured. As we sat in the run trying to calm Baker and Nugget sobbing and in shock I realized there were crows perched all around my yard in the areas where our beautiful girls laid, our cats were guarding the entrance to the run.....and Spot was perched over the door. It took a couple of days for the magnitude of what had happened and was happening to sink in. My funny little tribe had banned together to fight an enemy, my crows mourned the loss of our girls with us at the coop that evening and for the two days following. They perched in the trees, 15 to 20 of them, while I buried our girls and guarded our remaining two non stop during their recovery. Our tribe has grown again this spring, we have had the addition of our new girls, two racoons and a skunk and Spot has grown his family as well. I love Kickstarter so much and how supporting a project is like sending a gift to your future self. For instance, my kids are spending a few weeks at their grandparents’ house, and I’ve established a tradition of sending them a letter or postcard each day.
