I like to imagine that this is literally one of countless times this has happened. The scene is obviously intended to be seen as some big emotional and beautiful ending with them all being emotionally vulnerable with each other and them finally accepting that they'll go their separate ways, but my personal headcanon is that this isn't the first or last time this happened at all

Everyone jokes about how confused Karen must've been that everyone came upstairs for lasagna bawling their eyes out but I like to imagine she's seen Mike and his friends come out of that basement being sobbing wrecks many times before because they get so easily emotionally invested and sucked into the universe they've created that sometimes when a particularly good campaign comes to an end they're all crying their eyes out

It's happened before and it keeps happening because they totally started meeting up and playing again once they all moved away for college
