“Miss Wheeler?” A girl stood up from her seat at one of the tables in the corner of the restaurant. She had short, strawberry blonde hair and blue eyes and so many freckles all over her face. She looked harmless.

“Yes,” Nancy replied, smiling, and walking over. “Nancy Wheeler, pleasure to meet you. Did they send you instead of the writer?” Nancy held out her hand towards this girl.

The girl grabbed her hand and shook it. “No, I— I am the writer.”

“I must have misunderstood. I thought the writer was Robin Buckley.”

“Yeah, I am Robin Buckley.”

Day 3 of @strangerthingsfemslashweek || 80s Gay Culture || Robin/Vickie

After a few years of collecting mail-order zines from the cities she dreams of living in one day, Robin decides it’s time to shake things up in her boring Midwest town and start her own. 

Steve is the only person who knows her true identity as the creator of the Lavender Menace zine that keeps appearing overnight in lockers at Hawkins High, and even in the public library.

The content of the zine–frank discussions, art and poetry about sexual identity, feminism and lesbian culture–creates a panic in town, including a few notably hysterical letters to the Hawkins Post. 

Though Robin is pleased with the tumult she’s created, she also finds herself somewhat disappointed. She didn’t set out to court controversy so much as to reach others like her, and there are no whispers of anyone finding a sense of connection or camaraderie.

What she doesn’t know is that someone has indeed found what they’ve been looking for from Robin’s project, and it just happens to be her longtime crush and bandmate, Vickie. She devours every new zine late at night in her bedroom, finally understanding things about herself she’d always denied and letting herself think about Robin Buckley when she reads the risque poetry about quietly longing for someone forbidden. 

Months pass, and Steve reaches his threshold of exasperation with Robin’s out-of-control crush and decides to do some meddling by befriending Vickie. 

He’s the one who happens to spot one of Robin’s zines hidden away in the pages of a book in her purse. This prompts Steve to get in touch with his inner scheming matchmaker, and Robin’s frustration with him is forgotten in the face of Vickie’s stammering blushing confession of feelings and a kiss months, or maybe years, in the making.

Robin wanted to help, to figure out what was wrong, but she didn’t know how, and so instead she watched. So she noticed rather quickly when Nancy began slipping away in the evenings.
