Fall words: festival, spooky

“Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!”

Stephen startled as the plastic skeleton cackled evilly at him from the corner of the lab. Fake spiders decorated the various counters and plastic pumpkins covered Darcy’s desk. The woman herself was wearing a large black witch’s hat on her head and a cape over her lab coat.

“Spooky enough for you?” she asked playfully.

“Impressive,” he answered, glancing around at her festive lab. “You were telling the truth about your love for spooky season.”

“Yep!” She said unrepentantly. “Hi, Cloaky!”She waved at the Cloak, which fluttered back at her.

“Sometimes I think the cloak likes you more than me,” he sighed.

“I am pretty awesome,” Darcy said cheerily. “So what brings you in, oh Sorcerer Supreme?”

He took a deep breath. He’d been practicing this moment for a few weeks, but the nerves were still there.

“There is an autumn festival next weekend about an hour drive from the city and I was wondering if you would like to go with me.”

Darcy looked surprised for a moment and then interested.

“Like, as friends, or were you thinking a date?”

Stephen swallowed. He was sweating a bit now.

“The latter. Darcy, you drive me crazy in all of the best ways. I know I can be a nuisance, but I’ve felt a strong pull between us and I would like the chance to explore it further. As I’ve found out recently, life is too short to not take chances.”

Darcy seemed to be very moved by his speech and she rose from her desk, blue eyes wide.

“Wow. And here I thought you could barely tolerate me. Maybe it was a bit of the ole Mr. Darcy syndrome? But yes, I will go on a date with you. I love festivals.”

She added in a whisper, “Don’t tell Jane, but I have a weakness for the facial hair.”
