Photo taken by Dave Williams from the roof of what was then Highland House in Salford just opposite Manchester Cathedral, and is now apparently called North Tower. They were taken early in the 1970s shortly before the Old Shambles was raised when they created the Arndale Shopping Centre and Shambles Square.

When the Strangeways Prison riot kicked off in April 1990, some of the prisoners were assembled in the prison's chapel to listen to a sermon from a visiting Anglican preacher. A prisoner, Paul Taylor, rushed the prison chaplain, Noel Proctor, and stole his mic, effectively initiating the riot. The dialogue from the resultant scuffle was recorded and is amazing:
