(373938th try for the 1st part of the ask lol) Tbh I think these people haven't even paid attention in the anime either at all. Like, even in the anime, he "calms down" during S1 but keeps being an emotional boy (and for understandable reasons). It wouldn't surprise me if these people thought that being emotional = being aggressive, as nowadays people have less and less empathy. =_=) Also he - (1/2)
- is not the only character who acted irrationally at some point in the story. For the life of me, I don't understand why the Eren bashing continues when he really doesn't deserve it. Tbh he's way closer to Shinji than, say, Naruto. (2/2)
I think this ask was in reference to this post.
I know you brought that comparison up with good intentions, but considering how MUCH HATE Shinji got for decades for being emotional and "irrational" when put in extremely stressing and traumatizing situations, especially considering his upbringing, well... I'm not sure people have changed that much, when approaching real individuals or fictional characters with mental health issues. Just look at people making fun of Eren all the time, when he cries, when he fails, when he is justifiably angry, whenever he opens his mouth or show an emotion really. Now it's become a problem that he doesn't show his feelings, though, how funny. 😪
Just look at all those people excusing every character's shitty behavior when they're adults, because of their traumas as children, EXCEPT FOR EREN AND ZEKE. When I see people say that the Yeagers get an exceptionally bad treatment from the fandom, I just have to agree. And no, it isn't only about the current arc, when it comes to Eren. The number of heartless (and quite stupid) takes on Eren during any of his most stressful and painful moments is disgusting.
As for the anime, S1&2 explored Eren's trauma well enough, but S3, the part in the manga where it is explored 500% more in details, was extremely rushed and glossed over/didn't really capture how much strain Eren was constantly under, imo. So I can understand if anime onlys see Eren differently. It's when manga readers say shit like that that I have to raise an eyebrow, maybe two.
