If at first you don’t succeed – whatchu gone do? Try again if it makes sense, right? Well, that is exactly what I did recreating this fake straw set on natural hair. The first one wasn’t a “GOT’EM” because my hair wasn’t completely dry when I took down the rods and it led to a bit of frizz. However, this time we on the money, honey! There are a few things that I switched around to make this…
There are so many options when it comes to accentuating your curls the heat free way. We have so much versatility and option when it comes to our hair . Every curling tool gives a different pattern option and longevity of curl. With a fresh co-wash, some of your favorite leave-in conditioner and a moisture…
For The Love of a Girl’s Curls was originally published on Boston Naturals
So, the last time I did a straw set, it was less than spectacular (read about it here), but I decided to revisit it again yesterday evening because I like the style (when done successfully) and I knew I had to have been missing something. I learned a new rolling technique, which I’ll discuss below, so I was hoping for better results.
What I used:
Products:
- Karen’s Body Beautiful Sweet Ambrosia Leave-In conditioner
- Karen’s Body Beautiful Super Duper Hydrating Hair Cream
- Carol’s Daughter Hair Balm
- Oyin Handmade Boing!
Tools:
- one box of plastic straws (the same box from last time - some of the straws were previously cut)
- Perm rods (the larger white ones)
- Lots and lots of bobbi pins
(Ignore the water spots. My hair was dripping wet when I took this picture, lol!)
I started on wet, freshly washed hair, using the perm rods in the back of my head since the hair there is shorter and I’d planned on doing an updo. I applied the Sweet Ambrosia and Hair Balm on large sections and then applied the Super Duper on each section before I rolled it onto the perm rod. For the front, which is longer, I used the same products in the same order, except I included the Boing! because I want to make sure the front really had enough moisture, hold and definition since we were using the straws.
Now, this time around I used the whole straw (last time I cut them down) for the technique that I saw while watching Jouelzy’s roller set video (check it out here) where the hair is rolled in more of a spiral fashion (last time the hair was rolled too close together, creating coils that looked so womp-womp). I then secured each straw with a bobbi pin.
Periodically I would spray each section with water if it began to dry (you want nice, wet hair for a style like this).
I didn’t count the straws used, but from start to finish, it took me an hour and a half to complete, and then I sat under the dryer for 35 minutes. No way was I sleeping like this.
Once my hair was dry, I removed the rods first and teased out the curls, then removed the straws. The results are in the pic above. MUCH better than the first time. I was pleasantly surprised!
For bedtime, I made a makeshift satin pillowcase by tying one of my satin scarves around a pillow, and during a middle-of-the-night bathroom trip, I noticed that the curls had shrunken a little bit, thanks to the humidity in my apartment at the time (I haven’t turned on the A/C just yet), so I just grabbed chunks of curls from the front on both sides and pinned them to the side to provide a little stretch. This was my hair this morning.
My hope is that this style lasts me about 2-3 days. Next go-round, I’m going to try using less products and just going with a leave-in, oil and gel, and compare. With the days getting hotter, I’m going to need more hold than just the Boing! when doing this style.
