Mrigasira Nakshatra Imagery in Víla Amálka 🌼

🦌 Every episode of the series features Amálka wondering through the forest and investigating her surroundings. Mrigasira are called the “searching star” in Vedic astrology. They possess a boundless curiosity for the undiscovered that can sometimes lead them into trouble...🔎

🦌 Amálka finds an injured fawn crying and comforts it. The fawn tells her it’s being chased by a hunter. The word Mrigasira is a composite of two Sanskrit words that translate to deer and head. The Mrigasira constellation is also shaped like a deer’s head. There are 2 important stories pertinent to understanding Mrigasira and their connection with deer that I’ll share here: hunter and the deer and Rohini's transformation into a deer in order to escape her father.

🦌 Fairy Amálka sets off to stop the hunter. When he patronizes her, she doesn't retreat. She digs her heels in. The Mrigasira nakshatra is ruled by fiery and hot tempered Mars. Mrigasira natives are determined and unyielding in the pursuit of their ambitions.

🦌 To protect the young deer, Amálka uses a magical herb on the hunter’s head that puts him to sleep and then casts a spell on the his rifle. She assures the young deer that it will be safe. Mrigasira are "gentle, tender and peaceful, sensual and romantic, with motherly instincts bordering on self-sacrifice" (source).

🦌 When the hunter tries to shoot the young deer, hornets fly out from the rifle and give chase. The leader of the hornets orders the hunter to heal the young dear with a healing leaf. 🌱 Lord Shiva intervenes and punishes Rohini’s father in the origin story of Mrigasira by cutting off his head (this is also similar to Amálka hitting the hunter’s head with the herb!!)

🦌 The healed deer and Fairy Amálka run off together to find the deer's mother. The hunter walks away defeated...
