years ago and when he had least expected it, his heart had been completely taken over by a beautiful blonde by the name of renee. his high school sweetheart. things were always good between them, but as time went on and adult hardships came between them, things changed. it wasn’t right away and there was no real issues, but the time apart with their careers had played a major role in the love they once shared. renee was off on a path that was held dear to her heart, journalism. it called for her to travel and learn the way of the world while jonathan g/oo/d stayed behind and managed a small restaurant previously owned by his grandfather and passed down to him; the only grandchild close enough to put all of his time into running the daily services. most of the time he felt alone and like she was out having a life of her own, without him and because of that, insecurities seemed to get the best of him. he was jealous more than he let on and with holding on to those feelings, he often lashed out at her. through all the tension and time apart, his girlfriend finally came home and they tried like hell to make things work, but it seemed to only lead to more fighting. a month after her return, she was packing her bags and tears filled her eyes as she argued her in a last effort to make him see that she was in it for the long haul. jon simply wouldn’t have it and the ultimatum was given. if she walked out now, it was over for good. all of this in full view of their neighbor and good friend, pamela. she had always been there for the two of them and even more so when jon was left alone to his misery. he wasn’t a bad guy at all, but when he was angry things tended to fly around the house and most of the time sounds of breaking glass and other solid items often filled the silent neighborhood. most people looked away when he came out of the house to partake in simple chores, lingering glances whenever the back was turned, but he always offered the quiet and sweet brunette next door a smile whenever he could manage it. after all, she had been there for him when a rant was so desperately needed.
in what felt like years, it had only been a month since his heart was shattered into a million and one pieces. he sat outside with a cigarette against his lips, a nasty habit, the result of his loneliness. he exhaled and watched the smoke cloud off into the evening’s air, phone flat against the stone of his porch as a randomized playlist chimed on to keep him company. he was in a mood again, but there was no fight left in him. he had grown to accept the silence and the simple act of doing nothing while someone he’d hired to run the business so he could take off managed things. he sighed heavily, trying to enjoy the cooler air of fall, but nothing seemed to lift his spirits these days. everything that had once held color seemed dull and uninteresting to his sad, light blue eyes. a lump developing against his throat suddenly, he took another breath of nicotine to calm the threatening emotions, swiping the screen on his phone to let another song take him away.
