HP stream 7 after 9 months
With the HP stream 7 only 3 months away from its first year on the market I decided to talk about how well it has aged through its lifecycle.
I can first tell you that it has aged better than some of the older windows 8 tablets on the market (Acer Iconia W3-810). Besides the occasional wifi issue and the annoying noise when you connect headphones, there isn’t anything wrong with the tablet after 9 months of use. The tablet still runs as fast as it did when i first purchased it in late October.
The HP stream 7 is a model product demonstrating that even cheap tablets don’t have to be terrible. It may never be able to play games (and I tried) but it is still a good media consumption device that helped me watch videos when my phone was charging.
It may be bulky and slow for some users but for anyone who wants to watch videos, make an occasional word document and surf the web (at least with IE or Opera) than this tablet is more than sufficient even to this day.
I use the tablet anywhere from 4-6 hours per day and only find myself charging it in the afternoon. The battery despite it’s everyday use and age has not decreased the battery life. I know several electronics that after a year don’t hold a charge like when they first came out of the box but the stream has been fortunate enough to have a long lasting battery.
WIndows 8 on an 8 inch tablet may at times be troublesome. It wasn’t always a smooth sail, there was times when I wanted to throw my tablet out the window. Annoyances from it crashing on websites like MicrosoftStore.com to force closing apps made by Microsoft. I know there is only a limit to what baytrail atom processors are capable of but it sure did bother me.
However in the end these small trade offs are worth the price and even though it may not be the best option available at the moment it is still a smart buy. However if your looking for a cheap tablet i would recommend buying either a Chinese dual boot tablet (windows 8 and android OS) for the same price as the stream 7 or waiting for the next generation tablets to be released in the upcoming months.

When asked to trial the new HP Sprout, I was extremely interested in the idea of it being a desktop computer, which also featured 2D and 3D scanning capabilities, a 20 point touch mat and also touch screen interface which runs Windows 8. As someone who practices across many different forms of media, I found the idea that I could do all of these things in one place really useful.
As I am a Mac user, the Windows operating system was a little daunting, however the touch screen interface made the whole process more intuitive than I expected, and the integration of the 2D scanner (something I would ordinarily have to separate) made my workflow so much easier.
Set design, and also working with fashion/accessories brands is a large part of my practice currently, and after exploring the 3D scanner more I can really see the benefit in being able to scan objects to position them within the context of photographic imagery to see how they might look, which allows me to prepare really well for a lookbook shoot. In the instance of this project, I scanned the Stream 7 tablet case to be able to apply a pattern to it (which I used the 2D scanner to create from painted pieces of paper), which is something I wouldn't have been able to do ordinarily.
As this is a really new concept, some elements such as the resolution and contrast on images could be slightly improved, but overall this was a fantastic experience and I can't wait to see how it develops over the coming years!
