There are many roles that a visual artist fills. For instance, in smaller cities, having local artists brings a sense of pride to the community. Although I prefer to work alone in the studio and in the field, I am well aware that I am part of a much larger community I play a much larger role than one might anticipate, and I acknowledge that culture is fluid and cannot be treated as isolated in time and space. Just as I should not portray people as primitive vestiges of an earlier stage of human development, I also should not romanticize a culture or idealize another’s suffering as more authentic or natural.
