[03.05] South Main Improvements

Yesterday, Mike Brennan, Fort Worth South Inc's (FWSI) Planning Director, shared with us a few more details about the timeline for the city's improvement to South Main. Over the last several years, FWSI has been trying to get enough money together through partnerships with the city to rebuild the street -- both above ground and underground utilities. They are now proud to announce that the project has secured $8.4M to fully rebuild the street, including water and sewage lines underneath and some storm drains.

The street will be laid out very similarly to Magnolia Avenue, with buffer areas between bike lanes and parked cars, 10-12 ft. sidewalks, and 20 ft. spaces at intersections. Dunaway Associates are currently in the process of finalizing the design -- of which they completed about 30% last year. Construction is scheduled to begin at the start of 2014 and will take about a year to 18 months. 

On this note, bond elections for the city is coming up soon. In that election, they decide on what to do with $200M next year -- $160-190M of which is earmarked for street improvements. This funding is usually allocated to streets at the outskirts of town, where houses were built on narrow roads and traffic has become a problem. However, Southside has streets that haven't been maintained for nearly 100 years. It is a huge economic resource for our city, so we must make sure that the needs of our neighborhood streets are heard. Be looking for opportunities to speak into that soon. A signed letter for example. Or something super creative.
