BUT! I hear you say, an elephant is not a person because a person is a human! Aha! I say, only recently have we understood a person to be human, a slave was never a 'person', they were classified amongst the furniture in bills of sale back the day, and there were court cases to establish that WOMEN, yes half the population, were persons. Before that they were not persons under the law. In the US a corporation, a sociopathic entity by anyone's estimation is a 'person' under the law, yet it is not human. SO I put it to you, dear recipient of this message, that 'person' is a fluid definition and one which we should broaden to include other beings with whom we share this planet. Personhood confers legal benefits which are not enjoyed by animals at present, they are merely 'things' to be used and abused for 'product'. This is the biggest issue and ongoing horror of our times, yes we need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, and yes we must stop throwing plastic into our oceans, but these will have scant effect if we ignore the elephant in the room: animal agriculture, the environmental devastation caused by meat, dairy and fishing added to the cruelty on an epic scale, as these sentient beings are turned into 'product' for our consumption.
