Streiff was Gustavus Adolphus the Great’s mount, which he rode during the Battle of Lützen. After his death at the battle, his horse was sent back to Sweden and was stuffed and mounted around a wooden frame in 1633. He was sold to Gustavus Adolphus for a total of 1,000 riksdaler, which was what a painter earned in 30 years at the time. The usual price for a horse in the 1630′s was around 70 riksdaler.

He remains the oldest mounted horse in any museum in the world.
