Cloud kneels down to the boy’s level, a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “You’re pretty perceptive,” He said, tapping Denzel’s temple gently.
It wasn’t a secret that the kid looked up to him, and, in Cloud’s own opinion he’s not much of a role model to begin with. But he does try to give Denzel the support and motivation when he can.
“I have a favor to ask you then. Can you hold the fort while me and Tifa are out?”
A soft laugh left him, eyes closed as Cloud tapped his head. Even the smallest amount of praise was enough to bring a smile to his face. “You had to be…” the statement is loaded and he knows it, he doesn’t want to finish it for fear it would wipe the mood away. You had to have your wits about you when you lived on a toxic scrap heap.
Still, the smile gives way to something more serious, a nod, “yeah.” He could deal with things here, but worry worked it’s way across his features.
“Cloud…” there was a niggle, a creeping idea about what would happen if anything happened to them. “You’ll be careful, right?”
He’d come home, right?

( Late nights. )
★ ―――― Zack can only watch events transpire on Gaia. He can only be a ghost wafting through their pleasant days, walking alone through the Lifestream, forever fighting ghouls he can’t name or place.
His only comfort among this beautiful realm is the fact that he can watch his friends.
He does this now, legs crossed upon the lake he often ventures to. This magical lake never lets him sink, he sits upon it and it glows and glimmers around him, the waves lapping over his uniform but it doesn’t bother him at all. The water is warm, comforting.
Zack sees a watery image of Cloud on the lake’s surface.
He’s on that cliff overlooking a fractured Midgar. It looks like a mass grave with metal pipes and tin roofs as the markers for all the souls lost within that terrible city. But Cloud’s attention is not on the decayed remains of a place once loathed, rather his bright eyes linger on the Buster Sword.
It sits on the very spot Zack perished, where he gave Cloud his legacy, pushed it into his reluctant, shaking grasp.
The Buster Sword is near ruined being open to the elements as it is. Zack feels a pang--all that wear and tear on the sword Angeal once cherished. Zack wants desperately to clean the sword and renew it to its former glory. To see it so disused... to see the legacy rotting there... it makes his heart feel empty.
Cloud says to the sword quietly, “I wish we knew each other sooner.”
Zack lurches to the lake, so that his face is mere inches from the water shimmering this mournful image at him. Zack wants to cry, because that’s the only thing he’s wished for while he’s been trapped down here.
If only I had more time...
He shakes his head, a breathy, aching chuckle escaping his battered chest.
“There would never be enough time for us,” Zack tells the glassy image of Cloud. “I could have lived one hundred years and it would still never be enough...”
Fate is cruel and leaves him stranded on the other side. Zack merely watches the world race off without him.
He watches Cloud grow older without him.
“But, ya know, even a minute longer with you would have meant the world to me,” Zack whispers gently.
If only I had more time...
“ no, you ARE strong. ”

He still didn’t understand what he saw before him. The things he saw, the visions that plagued him, they weren’t usually like this. There was no pain in his head either, as he stared at... Himself?
“I’m... Not strong enough to protect anyone.” He winced then as a hot lance flashed through his skull as he repeated the words of the ghost that haunted him. “I don’t know how to be stronger.”

As he’s wont to do, Noctis simply follows the group of the ‘quiets’ when they venture out from Materia’s tower. He trails behind everybody else, taking on the rear guard on his own.
The ‘quiets’, as Noct calls them – the people here whom he tolerates and asks no unnecessary questions: Terra, Cloud, Squall, Y’shtola, Lightning. The other group, which he rather avoid, doesn’t need a name.
It’s him, Cloud and Y’shtola venturing out this afternoon (or morning? Time is odd in this world), and out of the corner of his vision Noctis sees the beginnings of a portal. Before the King of Light can turn, Cloud is already rushing forward, sword raised, and Y’shtola also readied.
He has reliable company. He summons only one sword from his complete armiger and waits: is this an enemy waiting to pop out, or one of the other group who did their own walking around and got swallowed by a random portal?

“....” She’d pause, her hues widened in response to the rather loud noise her latest test on one of her explosive,it wasn’t supposed to be that loud! And to make it worse, the stupid thing had knocked over some of the nearby loose rubble! Flinching momentarily, she would quickly shake her head before moving to attempt to pick up the fallen pieces.-Which of course was great! She could move most of them-Most.
Meanwhile, the biggest one wouldn’t budge and to make it even worse if she left it there, someone could trip over it or something like that!
