Geek Cave Plays | Strike Suit Zero
Here's a preview of the game Darrin will be reviewing in his September "Pile of Shame" segment during our GAMING podcast!
Elden Ring videos are almost all uploaded. I mean, they are, but the last one will be public in about an hour. Playlist in this post.
For the next game, rather unexpectedly Steven Universe won the poll, which may have been partially because the vote was split by the two other choices. As such, I'll be doing two games next: Strike Suit Zero Director's Cut as a standard playthough, and Steven Universe Save the Light as a challenge run of sorts.
Save the Light is kinda broken, and there is a way to get what is intended to be a late game item that makes the game harder much earlier than intended. The Crying Breakfast Friend badge cuts your party's stats in half when worn, while also occupying a valuable badge slot in your group. I'll be taking on all of the game's bosses with the badge equipped, and I'll avoid using the powerful Fusion/Team Attacks when I fight them. I'll also be avoiding shops and weapon upgrades excluding a required one, and I'll be taking Peridot to the game's first boss, where she actually can't use her mechanics properly due to the area not being programmed for her to fight in. If I think of any other restrictions, I'll tack them on too, but I'll need a bit of time to work them out.
Next game to play:
Unreal (1998, never played before)
Steven Universe: Save the Light (I've speedrun this one)
Strike Suit Zero Director's Cut (somehow never played before)
Three options this time, because I want people to actually have a choice beyond "picking the one Laura's never played" as the default. I don't expect much of a showing from poor Save the Light when it's one of maybe a half dozen games I've ever done speedruns of in the past.
I wouldn't do a speedrun of it if it won, but I'd try to think of something novel to do instead, sort of a challenge run kinda thing. Not sure what though... maybe Crying Breakfast Friend badge/No fusions for all bosses or something.
Real Robot-style mech media can be basically split into two different categories: mechs are the successor to tanks (think Battletech, FLAG ((that's an anime because I know you will not be able to find it with just the name))) vs mechs are the successor to combat aircraft (even if they can't fly, it's more about the sensibility of the thing than the literal function) (think Gundam, Strike Suit Zero)
Strike Suit Zero
It really feels like there should be a colon in the title somewhere, but apparently there is not.
I got Strike: Suit: Zero from the Humble Monthly Trove, and the first part of the game is figuring out how to open it, with no installer or anything beyond just a dump of the game files. (The game .exe is in the Binary folder. Spoilers.) It’s a space dogfighting sim involving the mighty Earth Republic battling against all those pesky Colonial Rebels. I kinda feel like I’m playing the bad guy? Anyway, some space guff goes down, and player pilot Adams is gifted the eponymous Strike Suit, a spaceship which can turn into a mech with advanced capabilities and is also impossible to control.
The controls, actually, are bad across the board. Not terrible, but definitely some eyebrow-raising decisions were made during Strike-Suit: Zero’s development. Left trigger speeds up, left bumper slows down? Left trigger and left analogue stick pressed together engages boosters?? X and B both target enemies but in different ways? The EMP, whch is used a lot, is on Y, but Transform which is rarely used is on A??? (These are X360 controls, btw. SNES arrangement might actually work better.)
Fin or Bin:
I’m not completely down on it, ‘cos it’s still fun despite the flaws. The Steam reviews for Strike! Suit*Zero? all seem to agree on a 7/10 score, I‘d more lean towards 6/10. I don’t engage with the story though- being a galaxy-spanning empire is only fun in 4X games where I’ve earned it through brutal peace-making and terrible trade deals. Let the colonials have their independence, and put Earth in the (Recycle) Bin.

The other day I got 3 games I off my wishlist I’ve never played before
Ikaruga: Pros: it’s hard Cons: it’s hard
Doom (2016): Pros: RIP AND TEAR! RIP AND TEAR! Cons: can get difficult find the next fight
Strike Suit Zero: Pros: looks nice and would be great to play with a control stick Cons: whoever decided on the lighting system needs to have their chair thrown out the window.
Strike Suit Zero: Director’s Cut
What I played: I completed the original campaign on normal. I used the strike suit in every level except for those levels which required the apex fighter or the bomber. I typically used the heaviest machine guns and lasers I had available. I used only rocket pods and did not use missiles. I completed the game using a xbox 360 pad.
