Organizers’ Meeting, Saturday, August 12, 4pm, downtown Oakland
We’ll meet at Paris Baguette, 14th and Jefferson (two blocks west of Broadway).
Come get connected with SDBA’s projects!
We’re moving along with our fledgling Banks, Bucks and Bullshit: Economics for the Rest of Us workshop (title is tentative, but we like it), currently in development. If you know something about how economics works, come help us create this. If you want to know more, help us find organizations to partner with in the design phase, and places to hold workshops.
We also stay involved with:
Advocating for the homeless in Oakland and Berkeley. Check out this recent Berkeleyside op-ed by two of our members.
Promoting single-payer health insurance (currently stalled by a powerful Democrat) in California.
Divestment by local cities from Wells Fargo and the other US banks that have confessed to – and paid fines for – felonies. DOME-Huichin (Facebook link), NoDAPL and many other environmental organizations are also working on this initiative.
money bail reform, now before the California State Legislature (AB 42 and SB 10), and also before the U.S. Congress in a bipartisan bill sponsored by our own Kamala Harris and libertarian Rand Paul. Bail reform is closely allied to fighting modern day debtors’ prisons and exploitive ticketing and fining schemes.
keeping up with the organizing effort for public banking in Oakland! To work directly on creating Oakland’s public bank, check the meeting schedule and recent progress here. Also this terrific video:
helping out America’s only non-profit check-cashing organization and fighting against usurious for-profit pay-day lenders and their ilk
student debt resistance
Promoting the concept of basic Income including the major victory in Hawai’i.
advocating for Postal banking
Presenting debt-related topics at forums and workshops
Bring your own debt-related project!
