Luang Prabang: Lao-Tai pattern heddles | Textile Trails
To avoid having to pick up the required warp threads to create each row of a supplementary weft pattern, Lao-Tai weavers have devised severa
This is another way of 'programming' patterns for weaving. One thing I gotta say, is the stored patterns are Beautiful
The bottom image shows blue and white patterned cloth on the loom. The top shows the pattern storage strings across the vertical string heddles. Each individual string is woven through the vertical heddles according to its place in the pattern, and kept in place hung on hooks ethier side. As a result the whole pattern is visible in the vertical heddles, white on white.
There are much better explanations at the link given above.
From same, weaving in action:
To use, the weaver pulls forward the individual pattern string, which brings forward the required heddles to be raised.
