To me Rosa ’Variegata di Bologna’ is one of the most beautiful and enchanting striped roses ever bred. While many of the modern striped roses can be a bit garish in terms of their coloration this Old Garden Rose with its large, cupped, creamy white flowers striped with crimson is the epitome of elegance in my eyes. The rose was bred by Massimiliano Lodi, Italy, before 1909 and is a once-flowering shrub which makes the blooms even more precious. In addition to the exquisite form and color of the flowers this Bourbon Rose gifts us with a very strong and pleasant fragrance. My photo which was taken in a private English garden many years ago does not do it justice. Once you have seen this rose in person you will never forget its very special beauty! Bourbon Roses did not do well in my previous garden in San Diego, but I have read that they like the climate in Austin, Texas. Can anybody confirm this?
