HAPPY 22nd BIRTHDAY DYLAN!
2/3 strome brothers ✌🏽 | 6.23.17
I just love Dylan Strome
I Remember You - Dylan Strome part 1
This is part one of first story I’ve ever written. Sorry its kinda short, I hope you like it.
Word Count:1,517
When I first got into hockey, I was introduced to the Dallas Stars and it felt almost impossible to start learning about other teams and players I would grow to love. The AHL was my gateway into other teams because I just so happened to be smack dab in between two teams each roughly an hour away. My sister was the one who introduced me to the Tucson Roadrunners but more specifically Dylan Strome.
I couldn’t wait until they played either San Antonio or the Texas Stars because then it would be much easier to for me to see him play. He was called up to the Arizona Coyotes very briefly right before my sister and I were going to see the Roadrunners play against the San Antonio Rampage, another team we loved. We started to worry that we would miss our chance when he got sent back down just in time to make the trip to Texas. On the night of the game, I was freaking out that I was going to be late, being held up at work longer than I had originally planned. Thankfully, we made it just as warm-ups started. After using the restroom to make sure my hair and makeup looked absolutely perfect, we got drinks and made the way to our glass side seats just in time for the boys skate out onto the ice. With all the boos filling the rink I couldn't help but smile because it was finally happening. I was finally getting to see Dylan Strome. He was no longer going to be just a picture or a video on tumblr, no longer a person on a pedestal. He was real and he was going to be right in front of me.
Too excited to sit down, I stood throughout the entirety of the warm up period. I made eye contact with Dylan many times as he made his way around their half of the rink, tapping the glass every time he skated past me. As the warm up period ended, I looked through all the pictures I took realizing most of them were in fact of Dylan. I had occasional pictures of other guys, but my favorite was Dylan, Kyle Capobianco, and Lawson Crouse all laughing about something. The picture showed how genuinely happy they were about being out on the ice ready to play. In that moment smiling down at my phone, I heard a stick tapping on the glass. I looked up to see Dylan give me a wink paired with a cocky smile before he exited the rink heading to the locker rooms with the rest of the team.
The game went great ending with an exciting Tucson victory. In the car on the way home, I couldn’t help but wonder if all those looks meant something or if it was just something he did with all the fans. I already decided that when they came back to Texas in a month to play the Texas Stars, I would be there to see them win again.
I had an entire month to prepare myself for that game. In that time, I convinced myself that he didn’t remember me and that the looks didn’t mean anything whatsoever. I mean, he saw tons of people all the time so what made me so special?
Before I saw them again, I knew I needed a Tucson Roadrunners shirt to represent my team. The shirt arrived the day before, just in time for the game. The day of the game was pure torture even between working two jobs. Neither one was busy enough to make the day go by quickly.
I stood throughout the entire warm up period next to the glass again, hoping for something to happen. I eventually gave up after watching him focus so hard on his shots and went to my seat so I could settle in before the game started. As he was skating towards the tunnel, I saw Dylan give one last scan over the crowd. I wondered if it was possibly me he was looking for.
Within the first ten minutes of the game there was already a fight, a bloody lip, four penalties, and two broken sticks. I watched as Dylan skated around without one, anger plastered on his face. I looked to my sister Jacey, wheels turning in my head. She obviously knew I was planning on doing something crazy.
I leaned over and said “I'm gonna get it. I'm really gonna do it.” Jacey stared at me and said “you do you girl.”
I decided that I would wait until there were two minutes left in the first period before moving from my second row seat to the first row behind the athletic trainer. I saw a small child come up next to me, tap on the glass, and exchange a look with the athletic trainer and saw him nod. I figured I didn’t have much of a chance getting a stick since they were mostly given to the kids. I knew it was kind of selfish but I really wanted Dylan’s broken stick.
The period was finally over and I had gotten the courage to get up and go to the glass. The trainer, Todd, handed over a cracked stick to the young boy he exchanged a look with earlier. With me being 5’ 4” and this child significantly shorter, I reached up for it despite the repeated “I GOT IT! I GOT IT” leaving his mouth. He was grateful once he figured out that I didn’t want to take it for myself.
After this exchange Todd looked at me. I took my hands and put them together as if I was holding a stick and pretended to break it. He mouthed a simple ‘ah’, kneeled down and came back a few seconds later with two halves of a broken stick. Smiling ear to ear I nodded my head and Todd handed it over the glass one piece at a time. Because the two pieces were much shorter, they were a little bit harder to reach than the stick that was only cracked. I stood on my tiptoes to grab each piece. I thanked Todd and went back to my seat where Jacey took a picture of me holding one piece in each hand. The other Tucson fans in front of us congratulated me on getting the stick and asked who it belonged to. I was going to show them the tape that I thought would say ‘DS 91’ on the top, but it was nowhere to be found. I started to get upset because I had his stick but had no way to prove that it was really his. Then I saw it, not a piece of tape, but actually printed on the stick itself his last name in all caps. It was then, as I ran my thumb over all the letters still convinced that it was a sticker, that I realized I had Dylan Strome’s game used stick.
“He’s my favorite.” I said as I showed them his name. The lady smiled and told me that she would have cried if she had gotten her favorite player’s stick. At this point I thought about crying because I was so happy, but I was wearing make-up and I didn’t want to ruin it. I could picture him sitting in the empty rink with his hood up taping his stick thinking about the game, and here I was holding one of them.
The game went by very quickly and before I knew it we were down to the last minute. Dylan skated off the ice to the bench as the next shift went out to continue the game. He scanned the crowd when he came through the door and stopped as his eyes landed on me. He glanced back at the screen to see how much time was left on the clock. With Tucson in the lead and no goals scored, I wasn’t surprised by their victory as the clock raced to zero. With the final buzzer, they skated around the rink with their sticks in the air congratulating each other as they passed by.
As both teams skated over to their respective exits towards the locker rooms, the announcer came back to introduce the three stars of the game. The first two stars were Texas Stars captain Curtis McKenzie and goalie Mike McKenna. He then announced the third star of the game, Dylan Strome. When they are announced the typical response is to skate a small circle near the tunnel, wave, then skate off the ice and go to the locker room, but Dylan came all the way to the Tucson bench and went in the door. He stood there staring at me with a simple smile on his face. Through all the chatter about how great the game was, despite the loss, and how long it was going to take to get home, I heard Dylan loud and clear say words I always hoped to always hear.
“It’s you. I remember you.”
Im incredibly angry that the coyotes traded Dylan Strome
