Struggles & Success: Managing My Money
Conversations about Money management are never-ending, especially living in New York City, AND especially when you have no job, and a bunch of expenses to take care of, PLUS, you want to have a social life, hello?!
In addition to all that, It's college, a time when we’re supposed to be independent, and grow as individuals, so I can’t just call my parents every time I’m running low on cash, (which is very often I might add).
During my freshman year, I struggled a lot to manage my money. I did initially try to budget but that didn’t end up working out because I kept getting hit with a lot of unplanned expenses. My social life also suffered because of this, lol. But There were times when I was able to successfully budget my money. What helped was:
1. Very very very detailed planning of my expenses, I mean seriously, like every cent. I wrote down everything, stuff like how much I was going to spend on subway fare in the next few days (#commuterlife), or how much I wanted to spend on food on any given day. This really helped because, at the end of the day, I knew how much money I spent, and what I had left over.
2. Tracking my spending. I always asked myself, what do I spend money on the most? What did I buy this day? Do I need to cut back my spending on this thing or that thing?
3. Separate wants and needs. Point blank period.
Managing my money is still something I’m working on. Last year was a test run, there were times when I was like, welllll I’m broke, and then times when I was like, oh yeah okay I can buy that or yeah sure, I can go to that event, no problem. I know for sure that this year will be better.
