My Year of the Book - Day 112: If you write for a living, or aspire to, you’ll know these books well, especially if you’ve wandered into the realm of non-fiction, or as John McPhee called it, “the literature of fact.” I have these and several others nearby at all times, especially as deadlines loom and questions crop up. Sure; you can always bend or break the rules, but you often need to know what rules you are breaking to pull it off. “The AP Stylebook” is beyond indispensable for most attempts at journalistic work, while “The Chicago Manual of Style” drives the bus for most publishers, especially those persnickety book folks. Then there is “The Elements of Style,” which has helped set the tone thru several revisions since the first edition appeared in 1935.
