Searing reminder courtesy of Luke Brekke, from his poem “Bottom’s Poetics” in the current issue of @poetrynw. I literally shouted out loud when I first read this line, feeling equal parts inspiration and implication. It became central to my design for the centerfold cento published in the same fine issue of Poetry Northwest. Sitting here stunned and dropdead tired. Sabina and I got page 3 printed today of June Jordan's “Poem about My Rights.” All 114 lines are now committed to ink on paper: set, dissed, printed, dissed, and set about 30 lines at a time (not much 18pt Spartan in my shop, but apparently enough!) by a 15 year old kid with so much grit, straightforward determination, and eye for detail that it just makes me cry. I'm grateful. I'm exhausted. And whoa – still lots of work before this project goes out into the world but there's a full mock-up hanging on my wall and it takes a tape measure to see how long it is. 49 inches, in fact. #junejordan #poemaboutmyrights #thekidsarealright #letterpress #teenageactivist #poetry #printing #ink #metaltype #woodtype
