A New Era Takes Flight Forty-five years ago today, the countdown was on.
This stunning shot captures the Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-1) sitting on the pad on April 9, 1981, just days before it made history as the first orbital flight of NASA's Space Shuttle program.
Unlike the capsules that came before it, Columbia was designed to launch like a rocket and land like a glider—a reusable ""space truck"" that changed the way we reached for the stars.
STS-1 was the first time NASA flew a brand-new spacecraft design with a crew on board for its maiden flight.
The crew consisted of Commander John Young and Pilot Robert Crippen.
The mission lasted just over 2 days, orbiting the Earth 36 times.
Columbia paved the way for the International Space Station, the Hubble Space Telescope, and decades of scientific discovery. Today, we look back at this iconic bird and the giant leap it represented for reusable space travel.

The Demogorgon. It got me. STRANGER THINGS S1E01 (2016) THE VANISHING OF WILL BYERS
i always misinterpreted the season 1 scene between nancy and flo at the police station. when nancy says, “he’s not my boyfriend,” and flo replies, “i think you better tell him that,” i used to think, ew, has jonathan been going around thinking that just because they spent one day together they’re dating now? but i think that’s not what flo was saying. right afterwards she tells nancy, “only love makes you that crazy, sweetheart, and that damn stupid.” and i realized that’s why jonathan and nancy work so well together. jonathan never expected nancy to return any of his affections; he was content just to harbor them to himself and have this crazy adventure together. jonathan loves nancy, and has always loved nancy, and that was enough for him.
