I have done a lot of visible mending for clients over the years and these are my top ten basic principles for how I tackle a visible mending project. You don't need a lot of technical skill to mend your own clothes with visible mending which is why I think it is THE BEST!

Swiss Darning // Duplicate Stitch for Mending // Visible Mending your Knits

This type of stitch is used to reinforce a worn down garment made of knitwear, but I think you can also use it to create embroidery on a knited surface! Sort of like cross stitch only using this pattern instead. I bet you can believably replicate the look of colourwork.
