Hi friends, first of all, looks like my ask was closed (and I just thought people stopped wanting to talk with me :’), sorry! It’s open now.
I went to see the play twice with @accio-hogwarts-a-history last month and have had a very brief recap sitting in my drafts for ages. My fave thing (apart from the company of @accio-hogwarts-a-history who is truly lovely and also slightly insane for going to see the play five times in seven days) was finally getting to see understudy Delphi. Scorpius was pretty awesome too.
It’s all under the cut! Daring sword fights, magic spells, a prince in disguise Annabel stepping in as Delphi halfway through the show, my thoughts on Stuart Ramsay’s Harry, plus random comments on Scorpius Malfoy.
Delphibel
So on Sunday, Annabel went on as Delphi in the middle of the show. In the first part Esther sounded like she was losing her voice, so when before the second part they announced that she has a cold, we weren't too surprised. There was a small announcement about how at the end of the first part, the wizarding world looked quite dark, but in the unlikely situation we manage to get back to the original timeline, the role of Delphi will be played by Annabel.
SHE WAS AMAZING. I can't stress this enough. She was truly vicious and terrifying and not as panto as Esther's Delphi sometimes comes across. The first few lines were a bit odd, perhaps because Esther had played Delphi on the first part, so Annabel had to play Esther's Delphi Diggory rather than her own. Once Delphi's real identity was revealed, it was magnificent and I was actually a bit scared for the boys even though I’ve seen the play a million times and know full well what’s going to happen.
Annabel is a bit taller and has a lower voice, so it was instantly more obvious that Delphi is older than Albus and Scorpius. She played Delphi as an unpredictable and entirely vicious woman, quite like Bellatrix. She seemed quite unhinged: after she ak'd Craig, she pointed her wand at Scorpius and kind of twirled it, as if she was considering killing him too. For the line about Albus being "a wizardwide disappointment" Delphi came so close to Albus, mocking his attraction in such a cruel way. At some point she took Albus's face in her hands and squished it. And she kicked Craig multiple times, which is not cool.
Stuart's Harry
Okay, this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but I really, really enjoyed Stuart's Harry. He has such a gentleness in his voice and it's painfully obvious that he is trying his very best and still failing. This Harry was so human and vulnerable and I'm not playing favourites but if I had to choose, I might prefer Stuart's Harry just a bit.
I think he shone in the blanket scene and especially the later scene with Dumbledore's portrait. I'm not sure if it comes across well from the script, but in my opinion the play makes it quite obvious that this is not Dumbledore like we knew him. The entire dialogue happens to Harry's benefit, and Stuart's Harry was so broken that he almost felt like a child, hanging on to whatever Dumbledore's portrait says, even if he knows full well that the portrait is just a memory of Dumbledore, repeating things Harry already knows.
I particularly enjoyed the scenes with Amos Diggory this time around, he's such a gossipy troll, and he always delivers the line "I've just heard a rumour - a strong rumour - that the Ministry seized an illegal time-turner from Theo-do-re Nott-tt and has kept it, for ~investigation~" in a delightful way.
Also kudos for Stuart for delivering the line about Ron’s love potion (”I think it’s a joke about - I don’t know what”) in a way that I actually laughed out loud. Jamie kind of breezes through the line, slightly puzzled, but Stuart's Harry took his time and paused after “about”, then rethought what he was about to say, and went with “I don’t know what”. Brilliant.
Scorpius Malfoy being awesome
- I love it when Scorpius does the dramatic bathrobe drop in the Myrtle scene - he stretches himself in an absurd way and just drops the bathrobe on the floor. It's ridiculous. (He also dropped the Durmstrang robe Delphi threw at him, and had such a look of resignation in his face when he scooped it from the ground)
- Scorpius was so shocked at "I hate homework?" that he dropped the book he was holding
- When talking with AU!Snape, Scorpius was even more gentle and understanding than usual: "you loved his mother" was so sincere and he had so much emotion in his voice in "when you lost him.. you must have felt so alone" - it sounded like he was talking more about his Albus than Albus Dumbledore. I've never cried during this scene before but I teared up when Scorpius said Albus's full name, as if he was talking about the most precious thing in the world and not just telling Snape about Harry's choice of baby names. Later on, Snape's line about Scorpius giving up his kingdom for Albus made so much more sense after this.
- He also sang "we'll use gillyweed to breathe underwater" (as he often does) which is kinda silly since it's a long phrase to just randomly sing. “..and wake up everyone at Hogwarts” still remains my favourite sung line.
- "We'll shout HELP" - Scorpius did that melodramatic thing where he drops on his knees and throws himself forward. This time he crawled halfway through the stage, then realised how ridiculous all this was, sneakily got up and did a small walk of shame all the way to the pumpkins at the edge of the stage and back. When Albus complained/laughed at him, Scorpius stood up close and extended his arms on both sides of Albus, so that it was almost like a one sided hug except Albus didn’t catch on that.
- "I think I might make the team - eventually - come on" was ridiculously funny: Anthony delivered the word "eventually" like a self-deprecating footnote, making it pretty clear that this eventuality is never going to happen.
Scorpius Malfoy being in love with Albus Potter:
- On Saturday, before the eternal darkness line, Scorpius looked up, closed his eyes and let the snow fall on his face for a while, looking like he was quietly building up courage.
- I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before, but when Lily Sr and James Sr come out of their door, Albus and Scorpius are pressed against another door, right next to each other. Then when Lily and James kiss, Scorpius instantly turns his head to looks at Albus's reaction. A+ acting choice imo.
- THE LAST HUG on Sunday. Usually they hug, disentangle and go on with the lines, but this time around Scorpius kept hugging through "I thought we didn't hug and" "I wasnt' sure whether we should or not in this, in this -", then he finally let go of Albus, and repeated: " - in this new version of us I had in my head" in a normal, genuine, heartfelt voice (rather than the squeaky nervous thing he sometimes does when you can't even make up the words properly). Albus's line about Rose was light-hearted and warm and this new version here probably refers to them being married.
Yes, I am queen of procrastination so here are the promised Stage Door photos. =)
Just look at these amazing people. We enjoyed ourselves so much. I managed a short chat with each of them this time cause the queue wasn’t too long that night. They are all so incredibly kind. Let me know if you want to know anything specific cause I can talk about the HPCC cast all dayyy! =D
Click on the photos if you want to read my squealing random comments from Stage Door with the cast =)
Ahhhh I have so much feels for today's performance! So many little new things that I picked up today. And the casts were brilliant, trying different things in some scenes. Highlights tomorrow! Also Stuart Ramsay recognised me at stage door, I am crying omg. This man is such a sweetie 😍 #keepthesecrets
Makes me so happy to see such an amazing bunch of people working together and supporting each other. The covers are great and they absolutely make the show happen! So much love for them 🙌👏
