One of my all time favourite characters (she was a bit of a scene stealer in my novel Minette, about her younger sister, Henrietta), Princess Mary Henrietta Stuart was born on this day, the 4th of November 1631 in St James’ Palace, London, the eldest daughter of Charles I and his tiny, exquisite French wife Henrietta Maria.
Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I and mother of the heroine of my fourth novel, Henrietta Anne, Duchesse d'Orléans, died on this day in 1669. Louis XVI was among her descendants and like him she was to know plenty of upheaval in her life time, which involved the execution of her husband, Charles I in 1649 and her own exile from England, which came to an end with the restoration of her son, Charles II in 1660. Unlike him, however, she died in her own bed in the Château de Colombes near Paris, probably from an accidental overdose of painkilling opiates.
