A government newspaper posts some irreverent material regarding Khomeini. Theology students protest. The army suppresses, kills. The clergy calls for protests and attendance at mosques after 40 days, a Shi'a tradition of mourning for 40 days and then gathering to remember the dead. Protests peaceful. Except in Tabriz, where tanks are sent to control the demonstrations. Over 100 civilians killed. Iranians protest 40 days later. This continues for 14 months. Tens of thousands are killed. December 1978. More than two million Iranians flood the streets of Tehran.
