“You need to be strict.”
via StudentSpeak
Context: a 4th grade dance class, in which I’m struggling to be heard, and getting visibly disappointed, and a little frustrated.
4th Grader: (assessing the situation, and advising) You need to be strict.
Me: Yeah, I know what you mean. But then I’ll have to teach against my values, and I’m not willing to do that; At least this way I’m modeling being integral. Do you see what I’m saying?
4th Grader: Yeah, I think so.
“Good”
via StudentSpeak
Context: It’s the end of a second grade dance class. A boy who was sitting out and resting / observing for a bit, because his head hurt, has now rejoined us for Shavasana, a restorative Yoga pose we do at the end of class.
Me: How is your head feeling?
2nd Grader: (on autopilot) Good.
Me: You mean it’s feeling better?
2nd Grader: No, not really. Kind of.
Me: Oh, I thought it wasn’t feeling good. Do you think you’d like to go to the nurse?
2nd Grader: No, I’m OK.
Me: OK. Well, I hope it feels better soon. And know that going to the nurse is always an option.
I’m blogging this, not because it was a particularly noteworthy moment, but because it illustrates nicely the shift that took place back in the Spring of 2015, and it’s aftermath. It’s incredible, really, how everyone’s always doing so “good”. I’m also curious to see how this post might come back to me on the ground.
