‘Tranquil adventure’ game Kibu announced for PC

Publisher Future Friends Games and Omno developer Studio Inkyfox have “tranquil adventure” game announced Kibu for PC (Steam). A release date was not announced.

Continuing to play Omno on the Switch.

As the levels continue, the bigger each puzzle-arena gets, giving it a Journey-esque sense of scale; and the trickier the individual puzzle set-pieces get.

Each level uses abilities you learn along the way, chained together or in combination with ancient gear that you activate using your staff, and/or light energy you collect from plants and creatures in the form of little white cubes.

Generally the point is to figure out how to get to an inaccessible high or remote spot, usually to retrieve an “energy ball,” three of which are needed to activate the key puzzle that opens the way to a gate to the next level (which may have a puzzle of its own to solve first).

Other mechanics include various “carry the flame” challenges to activate puzzles, Zelda-temple-style “use the lever to tilt / slide / point a thing remotely” tasks, some “match this pattern” games, etc.

There are more of the energy balls per level than you need, and you get 100% if you get all of them. Each level has unique plants and creatures (all harmless), and you also get points for getting up close to catalog them all.

There are also two or more lore books to find per level which give you some flavour text, murals to reveal (one of which lists out the crowdfunding donors), and a little green flying squirrel-thing which acts as your companion, pointing you towards puzzle areas to solve.

If there are things I find irksome about the game, it’s:

it has really fiddly, mostly manual camera controls. It often leaves you looking at the ground when you need to look forward or up. A traditional “keep the character centered, follow from above and behind” 3rd-person camera would have been much better.

Certain puzzles have a countdown timer, which would be fine, except…

…the fiddly camera makes it much more difficult than it should be to complete timed dash jump sequences (I swear I did one particular one twenty times), or to see a teleport target on a far cliff in the one second before you plummet to your temporary death, and so on.

In a related quirk, you really need to align the character and your camera to dash jump in the right direction. The number of times I’ve jumped sideways or skewed off-target…

That said, the minimal art style is appealing, the music is really nice, the creature and level design is varied and fun.

I find myself hoping that as I progress I’ll unlock some sort of true flight capability because there are structures atop cliffs or glimpsed during cutscenes that I want to explore.

(seriously like, BOTW has trained me to see everything as climbable or reachable with the right gear, so hitting sheer cliffs and invisible walls in other games feels vaguely disappointing)
