Coffee in my work
Thinking back to my childhood and the culture of food around me, the making of drip coffee stands out as a key signal of incoming guests.
It was a comforting smell. I knew the house would soon be full of laughter and conversation to listen in to.
I would glean parts of myself from them.
I still do.
We just have a different coffee machine now.

Daily Practice #2 This week has been incredible, and I can't wait to spend more time here and make stronger relationships and friendships and connections here atAlfred. This was the week of the Night Drawing. From what I heard from other older students was that it was rigorous and cold and something that shouldn't be looked forward to. I soon came to find out they were completely wrong. I absolutely loved searching for a spot to draw throughout the week and for the three nights leading up to the night I sat and drew I walked around a took photographs at night. I played with shutter speed and exposure and composition and somehow I ended up spinning in circles by myself somewhere in the middle of Alfred to take these photos. It was such a genuinely happy moment. Such an amazing feeling.
1)– David Bailey - David was born on the 2nd January 1938 he is an English fashion and portrait photographer his love for natural history led him into photography. David suffers from dyslexia and also has the motor skill disorder dyspraxia (development coordination disorder). In 1956 he was called up for national service in 1957 he served with Royal Air Force in Singapore. John French offered bailey to be his assistant at his studio in 1959. David then moved on to be a photographer for John Cole’s studio Five in 1960. David fashion work began in the late 1950s.
This image shows that the two actors can work well together the contrast is not to high, the skin tone looks a bit soft which is nice and the fashion for this image blend in well it all works.
2) - Annie Leibovitz – Annie was born on the 2nd of October 1949 she is an American portrait photographer. In 1991 at the Washington’s national portrait gallery Annie held an exhibition and was the first woman to have done this. In 1973 Annie started her career as a staff photographer working for the Rolling Stone magazine. In 2009, she was awarded the Royal Photographic Society’s Centenary Medal and Honorary Fellowship (HonFRPS).
This image shows that wearing white against a dark skin tone works well because you have that nice contrast to the image, I know the background is not pure white but it has that nice contrast.
3) - Irving Penn – Irving was born on the 16th of June 1917 he passed away on the 7th October 2009 at the age of 92 Penn was an American photographer known for his fashion photography, portraits, and his still life’s. It was a gentleman called Alexander Liberman that influenced Irving to start photography because he saw a talent in him. Penn often used the rule of thirds by having the focus of the image off cantered. At the beginning of his career’ he used a 35mm Leica camera he often used interchanging lens his favourite was the telephoto lens. In the 1950’s he changed from the Leica systems to the Nikon because he liked the various adjustments that were available in the system.
This image the background matches the skin tone i think the image also has the rule of thirds the pose of the image took practice and time to get it just right. The lighting looks like side lighting because it is more light on her right.
4) - Herb Ritts – Herb was born on the 13th of August 1952 he passed away on the 26th December 2002 he was an American and portrait photographer he took most of his photos in black and white, with a unique touch. He positioned his models in the style of classical Greek Sculpture.
This image the lighting looks like side lighting as the model left side of her face is highly lighted and the white background it shows beautifully such a lovely image i like the pose it looks like she is looking over her shoulder and thinking about something.
5) - John Rankin Waddell – Born in 1966 he is known under his working name Rankin, He is a British portrait and fashion photographer. He studied photography at Barnfield College Luton in 1992 he met and formed a working relationship with Jefferson Hack, the two thought to do a magazine together after they graduated and call it Dazed & Confused. But he launched his own quarterly fashion magazine called Rank in December 2000. Rankin was the photography teacher in the channel 4 series Jamie’s Dream School in 2011.
This image is my favourite i like the pose and how he used Rembrandt lighting to made the model on the dark side and with the white background the image really goes well.
