Above are contact sheets for both my studio social and location along with the final print with two shots from each shoot.
For my studio social i shot my friend Chris i had planned to shoot him for my Bailey brief but he wasn't available to later on and i didn't want to leave Bailey to late because of developing and printing, however i decided to shoot him in the style of Bailey for my Studio social brief. So for this shoot i used a white background and i used one light with a beauty dish attached to light the model, i had asked him to wear a suit for the shoot as this is what i had planned for my Bailey shoot but i also decided at the last minute to try something along the lines of what venture do in there shoots by trying to incorporate and aspect of the sitters life so i brought along a computer controller because Chris is into computer games however i don't think these images really work that well (since the shoot i has seen an image that would have worked a lot better where the wire for the controller is placed just under the lens and then goes out to the model, i think that this would have made for a better shot).
Overall i am very happy with how the shoot when and think that i have a good range of images but i feel like i could have been more successful in trying to bring over more of Chris’s personality in the images.
For the location social brief i decided early on that i was going to shoot my friends band Monofly, I found this to be the hardest shoot so far mostly because finding a time when everyone could meet and finding a period of time when it wasn't raining was challenging, also i have never photographed a group of this size before so i found posing them difficult also. My plan for this shoot was to do the shoot on a footbridge over the M8 at night so i could capture some light trails, i planned on shooting under the Kingston Bridge if the weather was bad. So when i final managed to arrange a date for the shoot i when down to the recording studio because i felt it was a good idea to get some backup image incase what i had planned didn't work out, so i arranged the band in front of the drum kit and took some shots, i then arranged them around the drum kit and then around an amp as well. The lead singer also wanted some shots against a white background luckily there was a white wall in the room i think these image turnout rather well but it was not what i had originally planned for, so after they had finished practicing we went to my backup outdoor location because it was raining two of the band had to leave so i was left with three which is what i needed for the brief (i found it easier to position 3 people than 5) so i did some shots under the Kingston bridge i tried a few different poses then brought in some guitars also. The challenge with this is i was using a long shutter speed to capture some of the ambient light so this meant that the band had to stand quite still when i was shooting this meant that not every image turned out well.
Although this shoot was the most challenging i am really happy with the way the shots have turned out i think the ones in the studio have turned out well even the ones with the white background because i only had two speed lights one for the background and one for the band, but i think the best shots are from under the bridge because this is what i had planned and tested for so i had a better idea of what i wanted. I think in the future i need to improve on my positioning of people especially groups of people.
