The film is a movingly honest portrayal of Black experience in its fullness and contains images that viewers may find upsetting, including graphic documentation of violence against African Americans. ✨📽✨ Join @studiomuseum, @visual_aids and @sugarhillmuseum #TONIGHT for “Day With(out) Art 2018 | Alternate Endings, Activist Risings!” ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽 Location: 6:30pm—8:30pm at Sugar Hill Children's Museum of Art & Storytelling, 898 St. Nicholas Avenue, New York, NY 10032 📍 This film highlights the impact of art in AIDS activism and advocacy today by commissioning compelling short videos from six inspiring community organizations and collectives: ACT UP NY, Positive Women's Network, Sero Project, The SPOT, Tacoma Action Collective, and VOCAL NY. 🙌🏾 The participating organizations represent a wide range of operational strategies, from direct action and grassroots service providers to nation-wide movement building. 🗯 Following the screening, grassroots organizers Cedric Sturdevant (The SPOT), Michelle Lopez (Just KIDS), and visual artist Frederick Weston (Visual AIDS) will join for a discussion moderated by Lauren Kelley, Director and Chief Curator of the Sugar Hill Children's Museum of Art and Storytelling. Panelists will discuss the role of family and community in creative responses to AIDS in New York City and the American South. 💭 This program seeks to reflect the persisting urgencies of today's HIV/AIDS epidemic by pointing to pressing political concerns. In their commissioned videos, organizations address intersecting issues including anti-Black violence, HIV criminalization, homelessness, and the disproportionate effects of HIV on marginalized communities. In the wake of yesterday's marches and in acknowledgment of the hard work that lies ahead, we are proud to be partnering with #MayslesDocumentaryCenter on today's screening of #IrisMorales's, ¡Pa'lante, Siempre Pa'lante! (1996, 48 mins). In the midst of the African American liberation struggle, protests to end the Vietnam War and the women's movement for equality, the #YoungLordsParty emerged, raising a voice for the empowerment of Puerto Ricans and other Latino/as in the United States. Through intimate conversations with former members and archival footage, the documentary surveys Puerto Rican history as well as the Young Lords's political vision and legacy. The screening will be followed by a talkback session with the film's director, Iris Morales, highlighting her experience as one of the first female members of the Young Lords as well as her work capturing the organization's history in film and the recently published "Through the Eyes of Rebel Women." ✊🏾 She will be joined by two amazing artists and engaged citizens also working to enact social change through their work: @miguelluciano_ny and @shellyne_r_studio! 💜 Drawing thematic inspiration from two of the @studiomuseum's current exhibitions, Circa 1970 and The Window and the Breaking of the Window, this nonfiction film series addresses the on- and off-screen legacies of socially engaged cultural movements of the 1970s. The selected films highlight the methods and leaders people turn to when everyday injustices move them to protest.
